Die äußeren Iridophorendurchmesser der Barben von Grünem Waldkauz P. p. purpureus (0,22 ± 0,03 µm, n = 244) waren kleiner als die der violetten Barben (0,28 ± 0,04 µm, n = 248), während die Innendurchmesser in beiden Fällen ähnlich waren.Für die mikroskopischen Unterschiede der Iridosomendurchmesser von grünen und violetten Mantelbarben wurde ein Breitengradient vermutet, der stark mit den Außendurchmessern korrelierte (r=0,9892, r2=0,9785, n=6, p=0,000174).
