Volume VII covers the Western Front of World War I, the most difficult of all for the cavalry. Highly successful mounted actions in the first months of the war were followed by frustrating years in reserve or in the trenches as part of the Cavalry Division in an infantry role.

Volume II covers the traumatic experiences of the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. Of the battle of Balaklava, Lord Anglesey writes as fully as has ever been done before. This volume also covers The Persian War of 1856-57, the China War of 1860 and the Ambela and Abyssinian campaigns.

The British Empire was at its height during this period, which saw the cavalry in many colonial engagements, such as the Moonlight Charge at Kassassin and the Charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman.
