Twenty-four-year-old Katy Leary was hired by Samuel Clemens (better known as author Mark Twain) and his family in 1880, and for the next 30 years she worked as their seamstress, nursemaid, nanny, and lady's maid. According to Clemens family friend and author Mary Lawton, Leary "seemed so a part of the household-so vital and yet so unobtrusively a factor in the life of the family." Clemens himself wrote about Katy, "Fidelity, truthfulness, courage, magnanimity, personal dignity, a pole-star for steadiness-these were her equipment, along with a heart of Irish warmth, [and] quick Irish wit..."When Katy was 70 years old-after the death of Mark Twain, his wife Olivia, and two of their three daughters, leaving daughter Clara to care for her father's literary estate-Ms. Leary sat down with Mary Lawton, a lifelong friend of  Clara Clemens, and recounted her experiences with the family. Originally published in 1925, A Lifetime with Mark Twain captures details of the life of an important American figure, told in the unique voice of Katy Leary-"her funny stories, her quaint sayings, her searching observations of life..."

""Schumann Heink: The Last of the Titans"" is a biography written by Mary Lawton that chronicles the life of the famous opera singer, Ernestine Schumann Heink. The book explores her early years in Germany, her rise to fame as one of the most celebrated contraltos of her time, and her personal life, including her marriages and relationships with her children. Lawton delves into the challenges Schumann Heink faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry, as well as the impact of World War I on her career. The book also includes anecdotes and insights from those who knew Schumann Heink personally, providing a well-rounded portrait of this legendary performer. Overall, ""Schumann Heink: The Last of the Titans"" is a fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in the life and career of one of the greatest singers of the early 20th century.1928. The book begins: I am a soldiers daughter. I was born, you know, the child of an Austrian army officer. My father was a lieutenant at that time. My mother was raised (and I, too, as is usual in the family of Austrian officers) in an Italian convent. She was most highly educated, my mother, and the education she then had no longer exists. Why, she spoke beautifully Italian, French, German, Dutch and even Latin-and had the most wonderful contralto voice you can imagine. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The memories of Katy Leary, for thirty years his faithful and devoted servant. The book is a transcription of a rambling informal account by Katy Leary of her thirty years' service in the Clemens household. Mark Twain suggested that the faithful Kate tell the world all she knew about him. At the urging of Miss Lawton, and with her assistance, Katy Leary, now an old lady who lives entirely in the past, made this thick book.
