Chiunque conosca Matilde Serao è senz’altro consapevole di non doversi mai sorprendere più di tanto: oltre che grandissima giornalista, fondatrice e direttrice del Mattino, nonché scrittrice prolifica, è stata infatti anche una critica dallo sguardo arguto e raffinato. Il presente volume – pubblicato nel 1906 – raccoglie tre suoi contributi, ancora oggi di stringente attualità: "Sognando", "La donna ispiratrice" e "Carlo Gozzi e la fiaba". Spaziando dalle riflessioni filosofiche sul valore esistenziale dell’immaginazione al topos della donna come musa ispiratrice, dal ruolo dello scrittore moderno al peso che ricopre la tradizione orale in letteratura, la grande autrice campana offre a chi legge una serie di pensieri mai banali, resi ancora più godibili dalla prosa fresca e vivace di una giornalista navigata. Insomma, una piccola perla di critica letteraria, adatta sia per gli amanti del genere, sia per chiunque apprezzi Matilde Serao come scrittrice e come donna.Matilde Serao (1856-1927) nasce a Patrasso ma cresce a Napoli, dove manifesta un precoce interesse per la letteratura. Nel 1882 si trasferisce a Roma, iniziando a collaborare come cronista al Capitan Fracassa, dove conosce il futuro marito Edoardo Scarfoglio. Sarà con lui che coronerà l’ambizione di dirigere un giornale. Nel corso della loro lunga relazione – da cui nasceranno quattro figli – i coniugi fonderanno vari quotidiani, il maggiore dei quali sarà Il Mattino (1892). Dopo una burrascosa separazione, Matilde crea un proprio giornale, Il Giorno (1903), e dà vita ad un nuovo sodalizio, sentimentale e professionale, col giornalista Giuseppe Natale. Matilde Serao è stata, oltre che importantissima giornalista, anche scrittrice prolifica, pubblicando vari romanzi e raccolte di racconti. Muore nel 1927, poco dopo che Mussolini in persona ne bloccò la candidatura al premio Nobel per la Letteratura.

Già pubblicato in precedenza, nel 1887, col titolo "Vita e avventure di Riccardo Joanna", "I capelli di Sansone" (1909) è un sorprendente spaccato sulla vita a Napoli nel XIX secolo. Considerato fra i romanzi più interessanti di Matilde Serao, segue la parabola esistenziale di Riccardo Joanna, figlio di un giornalista, che da semplice correttore di bozze ascende ben presto alle vette dell’editoria, facendosi dapprima redattore, poi cronista mondano e infine direttore del quotidiano per cui lavora. Difficile, quindi, non ravvisarvi tracce autobiografiche, essendo stata l’autrice una delle maggiori giornaliste dell’epoca e, come se non bastasse, prima donna a ricoprire il ruolo direttivo di un giornale in tutta la storia d’Italia. Una lettura appassionante, che conquisterà sia chi è già un ammiratore della grande scrittrice campana, sia chi desidera conoscerla attraverso un libro che la rappresenti a tutto tondo... Una miriade di sentimenti si susseguono veloci nella lettura di questo romanzo e ognuno diviene il suo contrario nello spazio di poche pagine. La Serao mette a disposizione una trama semplice, un melodramma classico, senza colpi di scena, senza eccessivi virtuosismi narrativi e lo fa con uno stile così particolare da rendere l'atmosfera rarefatta e ironica. La storia è ambientata nella Napoli di fine ottocento e già dalle prime pagine le descrizioni degli abiti, del mobilio, delle carrozze, è così vivido da risultare quasi reale, da manifestarsi davanti agli occhi, ma ciò che rende il romanzo degno di essere letto è la caratterizzazione dei personaggi.
