Værket indeholder to fortællinger.I Mordet på maskinbygger Roolfsen forsvinder maskinbygger Roolfsen sporløst under et besøg på en beværtning. Byfogeden, assessor Johannes Barth, aner et mord og sætter straks en efterforskning i gang, og langsomt strammes nettet sammen om den skyldige.I Jutulskoppen forelsker brødrene Jens og Halvard Skrubstad sig begge i kvinden Kristine. Halvard forlover sig med hende, men forlovelsen ophæves igen, da Halvard har en affære med en anden kvinde. I stedet gifter Jens sig med Kristine, og sammen får de sønnen Ivar. Som årene går, udvikler Halvard et intenst had til broderen, som har fået både fædrenegården og Kristine. En vinternat forsvinder Jens sporløst, og nogle år senere forsvinder også Halvards søn, Hans, og Kristine kommer under anklage for mordet.OM FORFATTERENMaurits Hansen (1794-1842) var en norsk forfatter. Udover lærebøger skrev Hansen en lang række romaner og kortere historier, men han erindres dog især som kriminallitterær pioner, Mordet paa Maskinbygger Roolfsen, som er en fuldbåren detektivroman; måske verdens første — i al fald udsendt før Edgar Allan Poe skabte figuren Auguste Dupin.
