Paradoxes is a philosophical treatise written by Max Nordau and first published in 1896. The book explores the concept of paradoxes, which are seemingly contradictory statements or situations that challenge our understanding of reality. Nordau examines various paradoxes from different fields, including science, art, religion, and politics, and analyzes their implications for human thought and behavior. The book is divided into six chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of paradoxes. In the first chapter, Nordau defines what a paradox is and discusses its role in human thought. He argues that paradoxes are essential for intellectual progress and that they can help us challenge our assumptions and expand our understanding of the world. In the second chapter, Nordau examines paradoxes in science, including the paradox of Zeno's arrow and the paradox of the infinite. He discusses how these paradoxes have challenged scientists throughout history and how they have led to new discoveries and breakthroughs. The third chapter focuses on paradoxes in art, including the paradox of beauty and the paradox of the sublime. Nordau explores how these paradoxes have influenced artistic movements and how they have shaped our understanding of aesthetics. In the fourth chapter, Nordau examines paradoxes in religion, including the paradox of evil and the paradox of faith. He discusses how these paradoxes have influenced religious beliefs and how they have shaped our understanding of morality. The fifth chapter focuses on political paradoxes, including the paradox of democracy and the paradox of freedom. Nordau explores how these paradoxes have influenced political systems and how they have shaped our understanding of governance. Finally, in the sixth chapter, Nordau reflects on the implications of paradoxes for human thought and behavior. He argues that paradoxes can help us challenge our assumptions and expand our understanding of the world, but they can also lead to confusion and uncertainty.Overall, Paradoxes is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of one of the most fundamental concepts in human thought. Nordau's analysis of paradoxes from different fields offers a unique perspective on the complexities of human understanding and the challenges we face in trying to make sense of the world around us.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The average man can act morally without first working out a clear picture of the future. It is enough that he has been trained to the habit of respecting current precepts, and of accepting the views obtaining in his circle as to what is good or bad, what is admissible or inadmissible. This morality, of course, is merely a matter of drill or training; it is unthinking automatism; it is inferior, and not to be compared with the living, creative morality of higher natures, which, as a sovereign law-giver, comes to an independent decision in every case and, like the guardian angel of childlike faith, guides man on his path through life, indicates the right course at the cross-roads, and warns him of pitfalls and stumbling-blocks. But for everyday use mechanical morality may suffice. In the uneventful existence of the average man, which passes in a stereotyped way, this mechanical morality is an acceptable guide and counsellor, but it remains an outside influence foreign to his inner consciousness; he is glad to deceive and outwit it, as a slave does his master's bailiff if he can do so without running the risk of a thrashing; but if his destiny unexpectedly rises above its accustomed dead level, then this dogmatic morality, which he has never really assimilated, leaves him in the lurch, and mournfully, in piteous tones, he utters the well-known cry, "It is easy to do one's duty; it is difficult to know where one's duty lies."

The Malady of the Century is a book written by Max Nordau, a Hungarian physician and writer, in 1895. The book is a critique of the cultural and intellectual trends of the late 19th century, which Nordau believed were leading to a decline in Western civilization. Nordau argues that the rise of individualism, materialism, and skepticism in art, literature, and philosophy were symptoms of a larger malady that he called ""degeneration."" Nordau believed that degeneration was a physical and mental disease that affected individuals and society as a whole. He argued that degenerates were characterized by a lack of self-control, a tendency towards violence and criminal behavior, and a disregard for social norms and values. Nordau saw degeneration as a threat to the stability and progress of Western civilization, and he called for a return to traditional values and social order. The book was controversial when it was first published and sparked a debate about the nature of degeneration and its causes. Some critics accused Nordau of being overly pessimistic and reactionary, while others praised his insights into the cultural and social trends of the time. Today, The Malady of the Century is considered a classic work of cultural criticism and a valuable historical document of the late 19th century.""I am telling you the penalty of property. You must be just in everything. Granted that the rich man is a criminal; granted his idleness is an offense to your activity; granted that his roast meat and wine make your potatoes taste insipid; it is in the order of things that you should envy him. But what comes out of this envy? Let us admit that you could carry through anything you undertook. The rich man would be plundered and even killed, and his treasures divided between you. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This Book Is In German. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
