Det klassiske tibetanske skriftsprog er dels vigtigt for studiet af den tibetanske kultur og historie i almindelighed, men er samtidig helt uundværligt for studiet af buddhismen, da en meget stor del af de gamle buddhistiske skrifter i dag kun findes overleveret i tibetansk oversættelse. Professor Hahns klassiske lærebog udkom første gang i 1970, og har siden været revideret flere gange, sidst i 1997. Bogen giver en grundig indføring i skriften, udtalen og grammatikken. I slutningen af hver lektion findes læsestykker med glossar.
