In December 1935, Zdenek Koubek, one of the most famous sprinters in European women's sports, declared he was now living as a man. Around the same time, the celebrated British field athlete Mark Weston, also assigned female at birth, announced that he, too, was a man. Periodicals and radio programs across the world carried the news; both became global celebrities. A few decades later, they were all but forgotten. And in the wake of their transitions, what could have been a push toward equality became instead, through a confluence of bureaucracy, war, and sheer happenstance, the exact opposite: the now all-too-familiar panic around trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming athletes. In The Other Olympians, Michael Waters uncovers, for the first time, the gripping true stories of Koubek, Weston, and other pioneering trans and intersex athletes from their era. With dogged research and cinematic flair, Waters also tracks how International Olympic Committee members ignored Nazi Germany's atrocities in order to pull off the Berlin Games, a partnership that ultimately influenced the IOC's nearly century-long obsession with surveilling and cataloging gender.Immersive and revelatory, The Other Olympians is a groundbreaking, hidden-in-the-archives marvel, an inspiring call for equality, and an essential contribution toward understanding the contemporary culture wars over gender in sports.
If you ever have tough decisions to make (and who doesn't?), then this really is the book for you. If those decisions include stark binary choices-stay or go? this path or that path? speak out or keep quiet?-then this book will give you a simple, powerful strategy for getting to the crux of your dilemma. Many of us agonise over big decisions (and not so big ones!). We can struggle for weeks, even years to make up our minds, and then we may still not be satisfied with the choice we make when we finally do. Why?Michael Waters contends, very convincingly, that it has more to do with the method we use than the decision itself. It's the method most of us use and it's inherently flawed. As Dr Waters shows, while it can help us move towards a decision it often leaves us frustrated and uncertain as to what it should be.The book is packed with real-life case studies of the many people that Dr Waters has helped to make tough decisions with confidence and conviction. Once you've discovered the way to do this yourself, you may never find any decision so tough again. And there's a bonus: Dr Waters also provides a simple, all-purpose strategy for making choices when the options are abundant or almost limitless. "Too much" choice is another headache for many of us, so a simple method for managing it is much to be welcomed.
"The story of the groundbreaking trans athletes and Olympic bureaucrats who set the stage for today's culture wars"--
"'Blessed be sin if it teaches men shame,' wrote Georges Benanos. Sinnerman continues Michael Waters' exploration of transgression as a mode of worship in poems that 'delight in wit and wordplay' (The Gettysburg Review) and display 'raucous devotion' while assuming 'a divine erotic presence even in his most harrowing poems' (The Georgia Review)"
Provocative, sexy, uncompromising poems about sin and transgression, love and darkness. Michael Waters' tenth collection is his boldest yet.
More than one hundred short-term bioassays are now available for detecting the toxicity, mutagenicity, and potential carcinogenicity of chemicals. These bioassays were developed and validated with individual compounds, and their principal application was perceived to be in evaluating the health hazard of such materials. However, man is rarely exposed to single chemicals; his exposure to hazardous chemicals is more commonly a multifactorial phenomenon. Although chemical analysis can be used to detect known hazardous compounds, it would be a staggering and expensive task to analyze large numbers of samples for all known or suspected hazardous constituents. Furthermore, the biological activity of a complex mixture cannot be reliably predicted from knowledge of its components. On the other hand, bioassays alone cannot tell us which components of complex mixtures are responsible for the biological activity detected. Thus, cost effectiveness and technical feasibility dictate stepwise and perhaps iterative application -of both chemical and biological methods in evaluating the health effects of complex environmental mixtures. Through the coupling of reliable biological detection systems with methods of chemical fractionation and analysis, it is frequently possible to isolate the individual chemical species that show biological activity. Initially, complex mixtures may be separated and bioassayed in carefully defined chemical fractions. The results of such short-term screening bioassays then may be used td guide the course of further fractionation and to determine the need for more stringent and comprehensive biological testing.
Waters's 13th collection delves into aging, caretaking, the shifting landscape of modern marriage, and the slippery nature of familial memory.
Bridge to Light and Love: One Couple's Immersion into the Shamanic Spirit World Who am I?What's my purpose for being here on earth? What happens when I die?As so many of us wonder, these were the kinds of questions Kathie Waters, coauthor of Bridge to Light and Love: One Couple's Immersion into the Shamanic Spirit World, was struggling with. She reached out to the spirit world for healing, and the spirits responded by healing Kathie-mind, body, and soul. Kathie's husband, and coauthor, Michael, became interested in joining her on this journey. They learned that everything in the universe is connected by light and love.Urged by the spirits to become a bridge of understanding so that others could also learn and understand these forgotten ways, Michael and Kathie Waters wrote Bridge to Light and Love to give readers like themselves the answers they seek. In a world of scientific logic, mathematics, and philosophy, this book gives people insight from the opposite end of the spiritual spectrum: faith, trust, and emotion.
Full of music, these finely crafted poems continue Waters' bold exploration of spiritual recklessness and celebration through sensuality and transgression.
Waters explores the confluences of the sensual and the spiritual, and renders their mysteries with precision and clarity. The title evokes the rigorous consciousness that prods the artist to deepen into his craft. Line by line, Waters delivers the passionate eloquence and intensity that distinguish his poems.
