Ce débat qui dure, avec des alternatives de repos, depuis trois siècles, vient de se rouvrir bruyamment. Une véritable agitation est commencée. Un savant professeur du Collège de France, M. Louis Havet, s'est mis à la tête du mouvement: deux sociétés le soutiennent 1; une pétition habilement rédigée est adressée à l'Académie française. Dans la discussion, à côté des anciens arguments, - les mêmes que produisait Perrot d'Ablancourt ou Beauzée, - nous en voyons figurer de nouveaux, tirés les uns des progrès de la science, les autres de notre état social, des intérêts de notre enseignement ou de l'extension de notre influence dans le monde. Je ne sais trop si les hommes d'expérience ont vu avec plaisir se rallumer cette querelle. Comme pour ces vieux édifices où l'on craint de commencer les réparations, car on ne sait, une fois les architectes en train, où s'arrêteront les remaniements, les gens sages, en présence des projets de réforme, ont dû secouer la tête. Je suppose qu'ils ont considéré sans aucune satisfaction pétition et pétitionnaires. Mais, puisque l'opinion publique est saisie, le mieux est encore d'examiner les choses posément. Tout n'est pas à rejeter parmi ces demandes: certaines réclamations sont légitimes. On ferait croire qu'elles le sont toutes, en ayant l'air de ne pas entendre...
