La intención del autor es la denuncia y la sátira social, no sólo de los golfos, sino de la sociedad entera de la España del siglo XVI, de sus convencionalismos intolerables, de la religiosidad superficial de la población, de los estatus creados artificialmente, de los códigos absurdos (por ejemplo cuando se cita una de las normas de la cofradía: no hablar con mujeres que se llamen María los sábados) y de las jerarquías establecidas, que normalmente no tienen más origen que ser del gusto de quien tiene el poder.
El Quijote narra la historia de un hidalgo manchego, de unos cincuenta años, que se vuelve loco por leer muchos libros de caballerías. El protagonista llega a creer que las narraciones caballerescas relatan sucesos reales, y decide salir de su aldea en busca de aventuras similares a las de sus héroes literarios con el objetivo de. En su mente, confunde la realidad y la literatura: así, la venta de un camino le parecerá un castillo; los molinos serán gigantes, y los rebaños se transformarán en ejércitos de conocidos caballeros. En su aventura arrastra a un campesino simple y recordete de nombre Sancho Panza, quien a veces de convierte en figura central de una de las aventuras más leídas de todos los tiempos.
