This book is an English translation of an entirely revised version of the 1958 edition of the eighth chapter of the book Algebra, the second Book of the Elements of Mathematics. It is devoted to the study of certain classes of rings and of modules, in particular to the notions of Noetherian or Artinian modules and rings, as well as that of radical. This chapter studies Morita equivalence of module and algebras, it describes the structure of semisimple rings. Various Grothendieck groups are defined that play a universal role for module invariants. The chapter also presents two particular cases of algebras over a field. The theory of central simple algebras is discussed in detail; their classification involves the Brauer group, of which severaldescriptions are given. Finally, the chapter considers group algebras and applies the general theory to representations of finite groups. At the end of the volume, a historical note taken from the previous edition recounts the evolution of many of the developed notions.
This is the softcover reprint of the English translation of 1975 (available from Springer since 1989) of the first 3 chapters of Bourbaki's 'Groupes et algèbres de Lie'. The first chapter describes the theory of Lie algebras, their derivations, their representations and their enveloping algebras. In Ch. 2, free Lie algebras are introduced in order to discuss the exponential, logarithmic and the Hausdorff series. Ch. 3 deals with the theory of Lie groups over R and C and ultrametric fields. It describes the connections between their local and global properties, and the properties of their Lie algebras. It is one of the very best references on this subject.
The Elements of Mathematics of Nicolas Bourbaki have the goal of giving a rigorous and systematic presentation of mathematics starting from the foundations, without prerequisites. The book of Spectral Theories is devoted to the study of normed algebras and their applications. The first chapter establishes the basic theory of Banach algebras and C*-algebras. We present the equivalence of categories between commutative C*-algebras and locally compact topological spaces, as well as the holomorphic functional calculus in several variables in a commutative Banach algebra. The Fourier transform, which is one of the most universal mathematical tools, is studied in the second chapter, in the context of locally compact commutative topological groups. The text is accompanied by many exercices. These two chapters are completely updated new versions of the 1967 original edition.
This softcover reprint of the 1974 English translation of the first three chapters of Bourbaki's Algebre gives a thorough exposition of the fundamentals of general, linear, and multilinear algebra. The second chapter studies the properties of modules and linear maps, and the third chapter discusses algebras, especially tensor algebras.
This is the softcover reprint of the 1971 English translation of the first four chapters of Bourbaki's Topologie Generale. Important classes of topological spaces are studied, and uniform structures are introduced and applied to topological groups. In addition, real numbers are constructed and their properties established.
This is the softcover reprint of the 1974 English translation of the later chapters of Bourbaki's Topologie Generale. Later chapters illustrate the use of real numbers in general topology and discuss various topologies of function spaces and approximation of functions.
This is the softcover reprint of the English translation of Bourbaki's text Groupes et Algebres de Lie, Chapters 7 to 9. It completes the previously published translations of Chapters 1 to 3 (3-540-64242-0) and 4 to 6 (978-3-540-69171-6) by covering the structure and representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras and compact Lie groups.
This is the soft cover reprint of the English translation of Bourbaki's text Groupes et Algebres de Lie, Chapters 4 to 6.
