Controversial since it was first published in 1890, Nicolas Notovitch's "The Unknown Life of Jesus" relates that Jesus Christ spent at least part of the years of his life unaccounted for in the Bible--from the age of 13 to 29--teaching and studying in India and other parts of Asia. Notovitch was on an "extended journey through the Orient...to study the customs and habits of the inhabitants of India." During his travels, he visited a Buddhist monastery near Mulbek, close to the Wakha River. Here a Lama told him that Jesus, whom the Buddhists called "Issa," had visited the region and that there were ancient manuscripts documenting Jesus' visit and that copies existed at other monasteries. Notovitch was able to convince the monks at the Hemis Monastery to read from these documents and, as an interpreter translated, Notovitch transcribed.

After the Turkish War (1877-1878) I made a series of travels in the Orient. From the little remarkable Balkan peninsula, I went across the Caucasus to Central Asia and Persia, and finally, in 1887, visited India, an admirable country which had attracted me from my earliest childhood. My purpose in this journey was to study and know, at home, the peoples who inhabit India and their customs, the grand and mysterious archæology, and the colossal and majestic nature of their country. Wandering about without fixed plans, from one place to another, I came to mountainous Afghanistan, whence I regained India by way of the picturesque passes of Bolan and Guernaï. Then, going up the Indus to Raval Pindi, I ran over the Pendjab-the land of the five rivers; visited the Golden Temple of Amritsa-the tomb of the King of Pendjab, Randjid Singh, near Lahore; and turned toward Kachmyr, "The Valley of Eternal Bliss." Thence I directed my peregrinations as my curiosity impelled me, until I arrived in Ladak, whence I intended returning to Russia by way of Karakoroum and Chinese Turkestan.

Shulim or Nikolai Aleksandrovich Notovich, known in the West as Nicolas Notovitch (1858-after 1916) was a Crimean Jewish adventurer who claimed to be a Russian aristocrat, spy and journalist. Notovitch is known for his 1894 book claiming that during his unknown years, Jesus left Galilee for India and studied with Buddhists and Hindus there before returning to Judea. Notovitch's claim was based on a document he said he had seen at the Hemis Monastery while he stayed there, but he later confessed to having fabricated his evidence. Some modern scholars view Notovitch's accounts of the travels of Jesus to India as a hoax which includes major inconsistencies. Notovitch also wrote some political books on the role of Russia in war.

In the course of one of my visits to a Buddhist convent, I learned from the chief Lama that there existed very ancient memoirs, treating of the Life of Christ and of the nations of the Occident, in the archives of Lassa, and that a few of the larger monasteries possessed copies and translations of these precious chronicles.

Si personne à ce jour n'a jamais été en capacité de vérifier les propos de l'auteur, lui qui dit avoir vu dans un monastère Bouddhiste du Ladakh des parchemins dans lesquels le passage de Jésus en Orient est clairement mentionné, il n'en reste pas moins que la thèse défendue par Notovitch reste des plus intrigantes. Car le sujet fit l'objet maintes fois de vives polémiques au point que la publication de l'ouvrage fut interdite à la fin du XIXe siècle par l'Église catholique. Faut-il dès lors y voir la volonté de cacher une vérité dérangeante ? Et si les documents cités par l'auteur étaient véritables ? Cette probabilité mérite d'autant plus d'être envisagée que d'illustres intellectuels, dont Nicolas Roerich qui fut Prix Nobel de la Paix en 1929, corroborent les propos de Notovitch et témoignent de l'existence de ces fameux parchemins. On imagine avec aisance les implications qu'une telle découverte pourraient avoir.
