The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies tosupport the authors.

This volume is an outgrowth of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Expert Judgment and Expert Systems," held in Porto, Portugal, August 1986. Support for the Workshop was provided by the NATO Division of Scientific Affairs, the U.S. Army Research Institute, and the U.S. National Science Foundation. The Workshop brought together researchers from the fields of psychology, decision analysis, and artificial intelligence. The purposes were to assess similarities, differences, and complementarities among the three approaches to the study of expert judgment; to evaluate their relative strengths and weaknesses; and to propose profitable linkages between them. Each of the papers in the present volume is directed toward one or more of those goals. Mit diesen bitteren Worten beginnt eine kritische Analyse in der Zeitschrift Politische Okologie"e; uber die bisherige Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte in Deutschland. Wird der inflationare Gebrauch des Wortes Nachhaltigkeit"e; dazu fuhren, dass wir nur noch mit einer Worthulse alles, was uns edel, hilfreich und gut erscheint, unter einen Begriff fassen wollen? Oder ist der Begriff mehr als eine dehnbare Schablone fur Sonntagsreden und folgenlose Absich- erklarungen? Der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit stammt ursprunglich aus der Forstwirtschaft und - deutet, dass nur soviel Holz geerntet werden darf, wie in dem jeweiligen Anbaugebiet nachwachst. Der sachsische Oberberghauptmann von Carlowitz hat im Jahre 1713 in s- nem Werk "e;Sylvicultura Oeconomica"e; zum ersten Male den Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit verwendet, ohne zu ahnen, dass dieser Begriff 274 Jahre nach dem Erscheinen seines W- kes international in aller Munde sein wurde (Peters 1984: 4; 261). Eine nachhaltige For- wirtschaft, so der Oberberghauptmann, beruhe auf dem Grundsatz, dass man nur so viel an Holz einschlagen durfe wie durch Neupflanzung an Baumen nachwachsen wurde. Die Idee hat die sog. Brundtland-Kommission ubernommen. Sie definiert nachhaltige Entwicklung als eine Entwicklung, die die Bedurfnisse der Gegenwart befriedigt, ohne zu riskieren, dass kunftige Generationen ihre eigenen Bedurfnisse nicht befriedigen konnen"e; (Hauff 1987: 46).
