Otto Neuraths berühmtes Buch Modern Man in the Making, erstmals 1939 bei Alfred A. Knopf erschienen, beschreibt den Zustand der Welt in den 1930er-Jahren anhand von Text und figurativen Illustrationen. Ab 1925 hatten Neurath und sein Team an einer neuen Bildsprache gearbeitet, die als Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education) bekannt wurde. Als durch das Aufkommen der neuen Massenmedien eine bis dato unvorstellbare Menge an Informationen Verbreitung fand, erkannte Neurath die Notwendigkeit einer systematischen Visualisierung - um Fakten, statistischen Daten und Zahlenverhältnisse auf einfache Art und Weise zu erklären.
