Ten-year old Pollye Franklin befriends a strange young man who cannot speak but who can communicate with birds by whistling beautiful bird calls. Later, the community is terrorized by a masked intruder who enters the bedrooms of sleeping women and cuts swatches of their hair, then quietly leaves. The young man is the prime suspect but the police can find no evidence justifying his arrest. To protect him from vigilantes, the Sheriff permits the young man to sleep each night in the jail. Several nights later, while the young man is safely in jail, the Midnight Barber strikes again, this time murdering his victim. Relieved that her friend could not be the Barber, Pollye accidentally discovers evidence incriminating the real murderer. Unfortunately, the murderer is watching her and quickly captures, binds and gags her. Later that night he carries her to a fish processing plant, intending to dispose of her in a giant pulverizing machine. The horrors that follow lead Pollye down dark pathways that no ten-year old should have to walk.

Quest for the One Perfect Diamond:Many centuries ago, King Arthur sent forth his knights to find the one perfect diamond as a gift for his queen. Sir Grenvell succeeded. He found the diamond embedded as the eye of a stone idol called Orac. Drumgargs, evil, black-robed priests who worshipped Orac, attacked Sir Grenvell. He killed them and took the diamond. A dying priest whispered a curse: "She who wears the idol's eye will surely wither, age and die." King Arthur ordered a golden necklace crafted to display the diamond. When the queen first wore the necklace, the curse proved true. She quickly grew old and collapsed, overturning a lamp and starting a raging fire. Alfie, the court jester, rescued the necklace and escaped through a concealed door into the Underworld.Fast-forward 1000 years: While on a tour of King Arthur's castle, three children - Lucas, Claira and Andy - find a hidden door and unwisely enter. The door closes behind them and they are trapped in the Underworld. Following the sound of chanting, they stumble upon Drumgargs worshipping Orac. The priests almost capture the children but Alfie rescues them and hides them in his secret cave. The little jester can never leave the Underworld. He can, however, guide the children to the hidden door where they can escape. On the journey, Claira is captured by Drumgargs who plan to sacrifice her to Orac. Using the diamond necklace as a lure, Alfie draws the priests away from the idol, hoping the children can escape.Do they escape?

Enjoying a Fourth of July picnic, nine-year old Pollye Franklin overhears a bitter argument involving Mr. Archer, an older man, and Rose Esther, a beautiful teenager. Rose Esther disappears after the picnic and the Sheriff concludes she's run away from home. A year later Pollye and her friend Mary discover Rose Esther's mummified body embedded in salt in the bottom of an abandoned pickle vat. Archer is charged with murder and Pollye, the only person who can identify him as the man arguing with Rose Esther, testifies as the prosecution's key witness. Archer is convicted and sentenced to death.Pollye later finds Spot, Mary's pet rabbit, in a neighbor's yard. Determined to return the little rabbit to the safety of its cage, she gives chase until it darts into a garage and hides under a workbench. Crawling under the workbench after Spot, Pollye is startled when Mrs. Archer enters the garage and discovers her. When Pollye attempts to escape, the woman captures her and brutally knocks her unconscious. Sometime later Pollye regains consciousness, stuffed in the trunk of a moving car with her hands tied. The car stops, the trunk lid pops open, and Pollye gasps - the car is at the edge of a pickle vat brimful of salty water and half-pickled cucumbers. Mrs. Archer drags Pollye out of the trunk and … you may be too young to read what happens next!
