Morgan Kane loved to play poker and drive expensive British cars. And he could afford both thanks to his deceased wife Audrey Sheridan. He and his stepdaughter Jonna now ran the Sheridan auto dealership empire. But Jonna's brother Matt dislikes Morgan and believes that Morgan's current wife Cynthia is a gold digger and a murderer. After Jonna divorces Danny Pastore, a good cop with a bad habit of sleeping around, Matt joins forces with Danny to get rid of Cynthia and grab some of the Sheridan fortune. Add to this mix Pamela Vickers, a convicted felon out for revenge against those who put her in jail, and Jonna's ambitious boyfriend, Paul Hewitt, and you have all the ingredients for multiple double-crosses and murders. When Pamela is arrested in Cynthia's bedroom for burglary and murder, she claims foul and calls on Nick Mercante to investigate. Deceived by Pamela once before, Nick is reluctant to help. Yet, as more facts emerge, he believes that this time Pamela may be innocent. But in the end, even Nick isn't sure who is guilty.
THE POCKET WATCH PLOT April 1865. Jefferson Davis gives identical pocket watches to a Confederate Colonel and a Major and sends the men off with half a ton of gold to bury north of Richmond. He orders them to write down the location, cut the directions in two, and conceal one half inside each watch until called upon to retrieve the gold for the Southern cause. September 2011. The Colonel's heir, Davis Lee Monroe, now owns one of the watches and half the directions. He learns that the other watch may have been inherited by Jason Spears, a disreputable lawyer, who has put it up for auction. Monroe wants the gold to fund political candidates sympathetic to modern-day secession. He hires Nick Mercante to investigate and bid on the watch. Spears subverts the auction by removing the other half of the directions from the watch. Nick then forms an alliance with two others who have been victimized by Spears-Alison McKenna, his jilted fiancée, and Peter Rutledge, his target in a baseless lawsuit. Playing their own game of deception, Nick and his allies manipulate Spears to get his half of the directions, but Spears has plans of his own to get Monroe's half. In a surprising climax Nick discovers the location of the gold, Spears confronts Monroe and the last gunshot of the Civil War is fired.
A CAMPAIGN FOR MURDER Take Billy Monroe, a divisive candidate for mayor of Washington, D.C.; his ex-wife Sharon Hays, an ambitious TV reporter who would exploit Monroe and anyone else to get an anchor desk; Angela Gomez, Monroe's campaign manager who is in love with him and will do anything to see him elected; and Art Cochran, a veteran cop who hates Monroe's liberal politics. Mix in Ellen Mercer-Ryan who fled an abusive husband years ago and lives in fear of him; Jack Fenton, her husband, a New York police sergeant still seeking revenge for Ellen leaving him; and Tony Caputo, who loves Ellen and supports Monroe's opponent. And you have all the ingredients for Nick Mercante's latest mystery. After Ellen finds the courage to divorce Fenton, he secretly goes to Washington on a mission of murder, while Tony hires Nick to find ways to protect her. Things heat up when there is a bomb explosion and murder at a Monroe campaign rally, followed by a shooting at a rally for his opponent, and a suicide four days later. Nick and the Metro police scramble for answers amidst rumors of political intrigue, while Fenton seeks to divert attention from himself and Angela crosses party lines to befriend Ellen. When Fenton, Angela, Ellen and Nick finally confront each other the case boils over in a surprising climax.
A DRUG TO DIE FOR Rachel Whitaker, a hospital chaplain, asks Nick Mercante to look into the death of her journalist brother Seth who died just before publishing a big story. Nick discovers clues that suggest Seth was murdered while investigating a possible cover up by a pharmaceutical company whose drug caused illnesses to Gulf War veterans. But to prove it, Nick must locate Seth's story and his evidence. Meanwhile, Jason Spears, a prominent attorney, vows revenge against Davis Monroe who shot him in self-defense rather than reveal directions to lost Confederate gold. Spears is convinced that Monroe, Nick and others conspired to deprive him of the gold. Spears is then approached by Pamela Vickers, previously convicted in multiple murders, who offers to kill Monroe if Spears will first murder Juan Costello, the Assistant U.S Attorney who helped send her to prison. Nick then learns that Spears's law firm represents the drug company, Seth had been under surveillance for years and now Rachel may be in danger. As more details emerge of Seth's story, the cover up, Spears, Pamela, and the plot against Monroe and Costello, they combine to form a web of intrigue also involving a pair of police stings and a professional assassin. Nick and the police are poised to set a final trap, but Spears, Pamela and Rachel confront each other in a thrilling climax.
