This book comprises a selection of papers from IFSA 2007 on theoretical advances and applications of fuzzy logic and soft computing. These papers were selected from over 400 submissions and constitute an important contribution to the theory and applications of fuzzy logic and soft computing methodologies. Soft Computing c- sists of several computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithms, and other techniques, which can be used to produce powerful intelligent systems for solving real-world problems. The papers of IFSA 2007 also make a c- tribution to this goal. This book is intended to be a major reference for scientists and engineers interested in applying new fuzzy logic and soft computing tools to achieve intelligent solution to complex problems. We consider that this book can also be used to get novel ideas for new lines of research, or to continue the lines of research proposed by the authors of the papers contained in the book. The book is divided in to sixteen main parts. Each part contains a set of papers on a common subject, so that the reader can find similar papers grouped together. Some of these parts are comprised from the papers of organized sessions of IFSA 2007 and we thank the session's organizers for their incredible job on forming these sessions with invited and regular paper submissions.
We describe in this book, new methods for analysis and design of hybrid intelligent systems using soft computing techniques. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems for solving problems in pattern recognition, time series prediction, intelligent control, robotics and automation. Hybrid int- ligent systems that combine several SC techniques are needed due to the complexity and high dimensionality of real-world problems. Hybrid int- ligent systems can have different architectures, which have an impact on the efficiency and accuracy of these systems, for this reason it is very - portant to optimize architecture design. The architectures can combine, in different ways, neural networks, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, to achieve the ultimate goal of pattern recognition, time series prediction, - telligent control, or other application areas. This book is intended to be a major reference for scientists and en- neers interested in applying new computational and mathematical tools to design hybrid intelligent systems. This book can also be used as a textbook or major reference for graduate courses like the following: soft computing, intelligent pattern recognition, computer vision, applied artificial intel- gence, and similar ones. We consider that this book can also be used to get novel ideas for new lines of research, or to continue the lines of research proposed by the authors of the book.
This book describes the utilization of different soft computing techniques and their optimization for providing an accurate and efficient medical diagnosis. The proposed method provides a precise and timely diagnosis of the risk that a person has to develop a particular disease, but it can be adaptable to provide the diagnosis of different diseases. This book reflects the experimentation that was carried out, based on the different optimizations using bio-inspired algorithms (such as bird swarm algorithm, flower pollination algorithms, and others). In particular, the optimizations were carried out to design the fuzzy classifiers of the nocturnal blood pressure profile and heart rate level. In addition, to obtain the architecture that provides the best result, the neurons and the number of neurons per layers of the artificial neural networks used in the model are optimized. Furthermore, different tests were carried out with the complete optimized model. Another work that is presented in this book is the dynamic parameter adaptation of the bird swarm algorithm using fuzzy inference systems, with the aim of improving its performance. For this, different experiments are carried out, where mathematical functions and a monolithic neural network are optimized to compare the results obtained with the original algorithm. The book will be of interest for graduate students of engineering and medicine, as well as researchers and professors aiming at proposing and developing new intelligent models for medical diagnosis. In addition, it also will be of interest for people working on metaheuristic algorithms and their applications on medicine.
This book presents different experimental results as evidence of the good results obtained compared with respect to conventional approaches and literature references based on fuzzy logic. The main objective of the present work is the generation of fuzzy diagnosis systems that offer competitive classifiers to be applied in diagnosis systems.
This book is focused on the use of intelligent techniques, such as fuzzy logic, neural networks and bio-inspired algorithms, and their application in medical diagnosis. The main idea is that the proposed method may be able to adapt to medical diagnosis problems in different possible areas of the medicine and help to have an improvement in diagnosis accuracy considering a clinical monitoring of 24 hours or more of the patient. In this book, tests were made with different architectures proposed in the different modules of the proposed model. First, it was possible to obtain the architecture of the fuzzy classifiers for the level of blood pressure and for the pressure load, and these were optimized with the different bio-inspired algorithms (Genetic Algorithm and Chicken Swarm Optimization). Secondly, we tested with a local database of 300 patients and good results were obtained. It is worth mentioning that this book is an important part of the proposed generalmodel; for this reason, we consider that these modules have a good performance in a particular way, but it is advisable to perform more tests once the general model is completed.

This book presents a unified view of modelling, simulation, and control of non linear dynamical systems using soft computing techniques and fractal theory. Our particular point of view is that modelling, simulation, and control are problems that cannot be considered apart, because they are intrinsically related in real world applications. Control of non-linear dynamical systems cannot be achieved if we don't have the appropriate model for the system. On the other hand, we know that complex non-linear dynamical systems can exhibit a wide range of dynamic behaviors ( ranging from simple periodic orbits to chaotic strange attractors), so the problem of simulation and behavior identification is a very important one. Also, we want to automate each of these tasks because in this way it is more easy to solve a particular problem. A real world problem may require that we use modelling, simulation, and control, to achieve the desired level of performance needed for the particular application.
We describe in this book, new methods for intelligent manufacturing using soft computing techniques and fractal theory. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems. Fractal theory provides us with the mathematical tools to understand the geometrical complexity of natural objects and can be used for identification and modeling purposes. Combining SC techniques with fractal theory, we can take advantage of the "intelligence" provided by the computer methods and also take advantage of the descriptive power of the fractal mathematical tools. Industrial manufacturing systems can be considered as non-linear dynamical systems, and as a consequence can have highly complex dynamic behaviors. For this reason, the need for computational intelligence in these manufacturing systems has now been well recognized. We consider in this book the concept of "intelligent manufacturing" as the application of soft computing techniques and fractal theory for achieving the goals of manufacturing, which are production planning and control, monitoring and diagnosis of faults, and automated quality control. As a prelude, we provide a brief overview of the existing methodologies in Soft Computing. We then describe our own approach in dealing with the problems in achieving intelligent manufacturing. Our particular point of view is that to really achieve intelligent manufacturing in real-world applications we need to use SC techniques and fractal theory.
