" Comme ce travail a paru à quelques personnes une utile introduction à la philosophie de Platon, j'ai cru devoir le réimprimer en essayant d'y apporter quelques améliorations. Mais pour lui donner un intérêt un peu plus présent, j'y ai ajouté une étude sur la dialectique de Hegel, afin qu'on put voir les analogies et les différences de ces deux philosophies et de ces deux méthodes, Hegel ayant souvent lui-même donné sa dialectique comme une application et un perfectionnement de celle de Platon. En publiant des études d'un caractère si abstrait et spéculatif, je sais que je vais contre la tendance du moment, qui paraît de moins en moins favorable à la métaphysique et à la philosophie pure. Et cependant je persiste à croire que ces recherches sont le plus haut et le plus digne objet des investigations humaines, et que leur abandon serait un grand signe d'abaissement intellectuel. C'est dans cette pensée et dans cette crainte que j'ai écrit récemment le morceau qui sert d'introduction à ce volume. Il m'a semblé qu'une défense de la philosophie et de la métaphysique ne serait pas mal placée ici, et protégerait en quelque sorte les études qui suivent."
