While I have been researching Gainsborough's fascinating past history, I have often come across the various names of Yards & Places that was spread throughout the Town. (These names often changed as different owners of the premises moved out, it would then take the name of the new owner. ie: Popples Yard, who was the name of the Tallow Chandler that lived & owned the Yard, this has now been changed and it still is known as Chapel Yard, Market St) The actual locations of most of these yards have disappeared a long time ago (a few of them date back to the 17th century) and more were lost with the slum clearances of the 1920s & 30s and even up to the late 1960s. The greatest number of yards was recorded in 1882, this was 121 yards/places, 36 of thesehad 2 entrances to them while the remaining were cul - de -sacs.This booklet is the latest edition of a great many years of work finding and locating all of the yards and places in the town of Gainsborough, it is by no means definitive as documents often reveal surprises but it is the most complete the work can be at this present moment in time.
