THE BOOK OF NESIMI Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Nesimi (1369-1417) is one of the greatest mystical poets of the late 14th and early 15th centuries and one of the most prominent early masters in Turkish/Azerbaijani literary history. RUDAKI: SELECTED POEMS Translation, Introduction & Notes by Paul Smith Abu 'Abd Allah Ja'far ibn Muhammad Rudaki (858-941) the 'father of Persian Poetry' and possibly the ruba'i, was born in the village of Rudak near Samarkand. First a wandering 'dervish' poet/minstrel he later served at the court of the Samanids of Bokhara. Nasr ibn Ahmad summoned him to his court and he prospered there amassing great wealth. He had 200 slaves in his retinue... and 400 camels carried his belongings when he travelled. In 937 he fell out of favour at court (and was blinded at this time as some commentators suggest) after the death of the prime-minister who had supported him. His life ended in abject poverty, forgotten by the world at that time, perhaps the reason why so much of his vast output of 1,300,000 couplets, only 75 rubai's, ghazals, qasidas and qit'as survive (most are here translated, the most published). Rudaki's poetry is about the passage of time, old age, death, fortune's fickleness, importance of the matters of the heart, the need to be happy. Although he praised kings, nobles and heroes... his greatest love was knowledge and experience. JIGAR & SEEMAB Meher Baba's Favourite Urdu Poets Selected Poems Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Meher Baba, took Huma (Phoenix) as a pen-name when he composed ghazals in his twenties and later on. He knew the ghazals of Hafiz by heart. He went on to reveal himself as Qutub (Perfect Master) and later as the Rasool or Messiah (Avatar). Of the Urdu Poets, Jigar and Seemab in particular were his favourites and he had a connection with them. Jigar was admired and read by many. He had a large following among the ordinary people. His fame transcended religious and language barriers. He was a great admirer of beauty and painted a living picture of it in his ghazals, but not stopping at that, his description of beauty carries one to a different timeless place where Eternal Beauty reigns supreme. On his death-bed Meher Baba contacted him. Seemab began ghazal writing in the 19th century. He composed remarkable Urdu translations in rhyming poetry of the Quran and the Masnavi of Rumi. His ghazals are suffused with true Sufism. Meher Baba while listening to the singing of a ghazal of Seemab was so impressed by a particular couplet that he stopped the singer and declared that because of it he had bestowed on him the ultimate gift of liberation or God-realization. SELECTED POEMS OF MAS'UD SA'D SALMAN Poet & Prisoner Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Mas'ud-i-Sa'd-i-Salman (1048-1122) was born in Lahore to wealthy parents who originally came from Hamadan. In the beginning he was at the court of the prince of Ghazneh and governor of India Sayfu'-daula Mahmud and quickly progressed in wealth and honour. When he was forty he was thrown into prison after being wrongfully accused along with his patron of treachery by Sultan Ibrahim. He was in the fortress of Dahak for seven years despite his protests in the form of qasidas and then was imprisoned for another three years in the fortress of Nay. He wasn't released until 1096. On release he returned to Lahore and became the governor of Chalander. Soon he was imprisoned again in the fortress of Maranj, this time for eight years in the most appalling conditions. The last years of his life he spent as the royal librarian and favoured by the rulers of that time. He became a 'Servant of God' or a Sufi and a bit of a hermit. He was a brilliant poet and scholar and learnt astronomy (in prison) calligraphy and military affairs (that often got him into trouble). His famous Habsiyyat, (prison-songs) are among the most interesting poems in the Persian language. He was always an optimist, despite his long prison terms. Sana'i praised him and collected his poems into a Divan and he was admired by Mu'izzi, Anvari, Khaqani and Nava'i who called him "the agile horseman on the racecourse of the qasida and the incomparable creator of words."
