PUNE: THE CITY OF GOD (A Spiritual Guidebook to the New Bethlehem) Poems & Photographs by Paul Smith In 1985 the author began to feel the need (usually on the site, or shortly afterwards) to put pen to paper and express in free-form, internally-rhyming poetry... a kind of descriptive inner and outer guide to each 'Baba place' in Meher Baba's birth-place of Pune, as he was experiencing it... a 'feeling' of the presence of the Master from the past that was still available... and, (having gone back often to many of the places and discovered this)... the future. He began to take photographs of the places at the same time, sometimes even in the middle of writing the poem. Interestingly, often when he read these poems to others they inspired them to visit Pune and see and experience Meher Baba's presence in these places for themselves. 200 pagesCOMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. SUFI STORIES OF THE MASTER POETS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith The masnavi is the main form used in Persian and other poetry to write epic ballads or romances or Sufi stories and is essentially a Persian invention. Each couplet has a different rhyme with both lines rhyming. This is to allow the poet greater freedom to go into a longer description of the subject he has chosen to present. With the masnavis of 'Enclosed Garden of the Truth' of Sana'i, the 'Five Treasures' of Nizami, the 'Conference of the Birds' and 'The Book of God' and many others by 'Attar, the 'Seven Thrones' of Jami and of course the great 'Masnavi' of Rumi... the form had become widely used in Sufism to tell stories. 'Arifi's 'Book of Ecstasy' masnavi is the last great Sufi masnavi poem before the last great Sufi poet of the Classical Period in Persian Poetry who mastered this form, Jami... also from Herat. The form & meaning has been kept in most translations of these beautiful, often witty, occasionally obscene, unpredictable, insightful, usually mystical poems. Introduction: Masnavi in Sufi Story-Telling Poetry, Some of the Great Masnavi Poets of Persia before Sana'i. THE POETS (Story Tellers) Sana'i, Nizami, 'Attar, Rumi, 'Iraqi, Sadi, Obeyd Zakani, Kasim Anvar, 'Arifi, Shah Da'i, Jami, Parvin, Paul. GOING BACK A Movie of War & Peace Based on a True Story Screenplay by Paul Smith GOING BACK is a movie inspired by a true story of love, courage and determination set in a land at peace, Australia; and a land at war... Cambodia. It is the story of people made into refugees by war: the orphans, the old, the young and those who have lost everything and the effect that deadly landmines often have on them. It is the story of the few from America and Australia who stand up to help and love and befriend and help them. But it is mostly the amazing true story of one man who rises out of the depth of despair and through a stroke of good fortune sets off on an odyssey into a living hell and by his inventiveness and sense of humour many lives are saved and changed. Unlike other stories set in Vietnam and Cambodia that tell of war from the soldiers point of view, GOING BACK tells the tale of an ordinary man and people who act extraordinarily in the worst kinds of situations. It is a story from the recent past that could have been ripped from the headlines of today and probably tomorrow. It is an important story, a sad, funny, weird, fantastic, awful, heroic story of war and love and peace and friendship that had to be told. Paul Smith is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Lalla Ded and many others and poetry, children's books, fiction, plays, biographies and a dozen screenplays. Ruba'iyats of Two Great Female Persian Sufi Poets Mahsati Ganjavi & Jahan Khatun Translation & Introduction Paul Smith The ruba'i is perhaps the oldest form in Persian Sufi Poetry. In its four lines, most rhyming, can be found the wisdom, suffering, love and mysticism of two of its greatest female exponents of Sufi Spirituality and ordinary human love, despair and grief. Mahsati Ganjavi's (1098-1185) lived in Ganjeh when Sultan Sanjar reigned and as was a poet at his court she would have known Anvari. She was a court, dervish and ribald poet. She knew Nizami (she is said to have been buried in his mausoleum) and Omar Khayyam... and like Omar composed only in the ruba'i form and must be considered not only a master of that form but also to have helped to revolutionize it. She was an influence on perhaps Persia's greatest female poet Jahan Khatun. Included in the Introduction are the life of Mahsati and a history of the ruba'i and examples by its greatest exponents. Selected Bibliography included. Jahan Khatun was the daughter of the king of one of Shiraz's most turbulent times (14th century) Masud Shah; pupil and lifelong friend of the world's greatest mystical, lyric poet, Hafiz; the object of crazed desire by (among others) Iran's greatest satirist, Obeyd Zakani. Her Divan is four times the size of Hafiz's and contains many hundreds of ruba'is.. The correct rhyme-structure is kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these often mystical nd sometimes sad and griefstricken poems... Introduction on her Life, Times & Poetry and there is a unique Preface by herself. Selected Bibliography. Large Format "7 x 10" 273 pages. THE ENCLOSED GARDEN OF THE TRUTH Hakim Sana'i. Translation and Introduction Paul Smith. Hakim Sana'i (1050-1131) is best known for his classic mystical poetry in the forms of ghazals, ruba'is and masnavis. He is considered one of the finest and first poets in the Sufi tradition. Sana'i means 'insight'. The epithet 'hakim' ('wise one') was typically reserved for people of great learning. Sana'i was born in the city of Ghazna. Sana'i appears to have suddenly abandoned his career as a professional poet after making the acquaintance of a 'drinker of dregs' a God-intoxicated soul named Lai Khur, in about 1114. Later, mystical writing was popular among the ruling classes and the poet soon attracted the attention of the sultan, Bahramshah. Now old, Sana'i wrote the first major Sufi masnavi in the Persian language. Titled 'The Enclosed Garden of the Truth', the poem of 10,000 couplets contains mystical teachings intermingled with proverbs, fables, anecdotes and even obscene stories, in six volumes. This is the first volume. The uncommon manner in which Sana'i introduced and explained the esoteric teachings of Sufism through the medium of poetry was the key to its popularity and lasting value. It is still widely considered by scholars to be the first great mystical poem in Persian and the work had wide-reaching influence on Persian poetry influencing Nizami to compose 'Treasury of the Mysteries', 'Attar to compose his 'Book of God' and Rumi to compose his 6 volume 'Masnavi' and Sadi his 'Bustan'. Rumi said, " 'Attar is the soul and Sana'i the eyes and I came after them'." Introduction: Life & Times & Poetry of Sana'i; Sufis & Dervishes: Their Art & Use of Poetry; Forms in Persian Poetry Used by Sana'i; The Persian Masnavi before Sana'i; Four Great Masnavi Sufi Poets & their Poems that were influenced by Sana'is Poem; Selected Bibliography. NIZAMI: LAYLA AND MAJNUN Translation & Introduction Paul Smith It is impossible to underestimate the effect of Nizami's 'Layla and Majnun' on the world over the past 800 years. Many poets throughout this period have copied or been influenced by his story of the young lovers. Many Master-Poets besides Ibn 'Arabi, 'Attar, Rumi, Sadi, Hafiz and Jami have quoted from him or like him have used the story of the desperate lovers to illustrate how human love can be transformed into divine love through separation and longing. It is said that no one has painted a more perfect picture of women in Persian Literature than Nizami. Paintings by the thousands, songs (even 'modern' ones by singer-songwriters such as Eric Clapton) in the many hundreds have been inspired by Nizami's long poem... also plays (Shauqi's is wonderful), operas, symphonies and films. Today the influence of his book seems more alive than ever and is growing. Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' is said to have been written under Nizami's influence. Paul Smith has kept to the correct rhyme-structure of this long masnavi epic poem, while retaining the beauty of the poetry, the mystical meaning and simplicity of the form. He has included a long Introduction on his life and chapters on all of the works of this great Master/Poet. Bibliography. 230 pages.
