AL-MUTANABBI 'THE GREATEST ARABIC POET' Selected Poems. Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Abu 'l-Tayyib Ahmad ibn Husain al-Mutanabbi, (915-965 A.D.), was one of the greatest of Arabic poets (many say the greatest), was born in the town of al-Kufah in Iraq. He was the son of a water carrier who was said to be of noble and ancient southern Arabian descent. In his youth, al-Mutanabbi was educated in Syria in Damascus. He lived among the Bedouin of the Banu Qalb tribe and learnt their skills. In his youth he received his nickname 'al-Mutanabbi', meaning 'one who wants to be a prophet'. Why he was named so is unclear, but... he was the leader of a revolutionary movement and, claiming to be a prophet, led a revolt in his home-town in 932 at the age of 17. It was suppressed and he was imprisoned. During this period he began to write his first poems. R.A. Nicholson in his 'Translations of Eastern Poetry and Prose' says, "Any one who reads him in Arabic must admire the splendour of his rhetoric, the luxuriance of his imagination, and the energy and aptness of his diction..." QASIDA BURDAH Three Poems of the Prophet's Mantle & the Mevlidi Sherif (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Ka'b ibn Zuhair (died 7th century A.D.) was a famous poet who at first opposed Prophet Muhammad. Finally, he secretly went to Medina and approached the Prophet to ask if one who repented and embraced the faith would be forgiven. Mohammed answered yes and the poet asked, "Even Ka'b ibn Zuhair?" When he affirmed this, Ka'b revealed his identity and read a poem, his Banat Suad (of 55 couplets), which would become his most famous poem. Oswald Hall was a dynamic person who lifted you up with his love and enthusiasm for life and art and poetry and... everything. He seemed to have some knowledge about most things and his description of Meher Baba when Baba came to his house in Eltham in 1956 was the nail that finally hit the head of any doubt I may have had about Baba at that time. For the following twenty years over many late night drinks and smokes we discussed and argued about almost every subject in the universe, but mainly about Baba and the great Sufi poets, wine and painting and culture and our own poetry and writing and his wonderful paintings that filled his house, mainly of Meher Baba (many of these are lost to us today).
