Perumal Murugan has created the novels 'Arthanari' and 'Alavayan' from two different angles following 'Mathorubagan'. These are not successive parts of a novel, but rather are complete and separate from each other. Both start at the same point but travel in different directions. The novel 'Alavayan' aims to see the expansion of the world of women and the feelings that run within it. The novel depicts the relentless onslaught of questions about relationships, and the struggles of human beings to overcome them.
Perumal Murugan has created the novels 'Arthanari' and 'Alavayan' from two different angles following 'Mathorubagan'. These are not successive parts of a novel, but rather are complete and separate from each other. Both start at the same point but travel in different directions. 'Arthanari' speaks to the relationship problems caused by the male's sense of possession over the female. The novel goes on to describe the way in which the resulting values pervade human minds.
Women that do not get married at the 'appropriate' age, owing to dowry difficulties, have been collectively referred to as 'Spinster'. Today, the number of unmarried men has increased. Do we now refer to them as 'Male Spinster'? 'Kanganam' speaks about the problems faced by one such 'Male Spinster''. Released in 2008 and garnered significant attention, this novel is still relevant today. Many people have identified themselves with the protagonist - Marimuthu. The passage of time has multiplied this lone Marimuthu into many.
Set against the backdrop of the temporary phenomenon of general lockdown, PerumalMurugan's novel deals with some of the permanent problems of human life. There are twojourneys in the novel. One is a road trip and another is the inner journey through life. Bothtravel in parallel lines influencing each other in the narrative. The novel examines the values oflove against the backdrop of the inevitable nature of real life. The novel takes a closer look atthe nature of love, its transformations and the pains it causes in the context of various elementsthat try to penetrate the natural attraction between a man and a woman. It signifies thestrength of love that cannot be controlled by social values and customs. The novel unfolds fromthe perspective of the youth of today's generation and appropriately accommodates the viewsof the generations of yesteryear.

The vision he saw in his dream, a world in ruins and bereft of women-was that going to come true soon? If he could get married, he would live the way people lived in the old days. He wanted to have at least ten children, and he wanted them all to be girls. The world should never again witness the sorrow of a man like him. It might be a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, or at least a piece of land, must be in want of a wife, but Marimuthu's path to marriage is strewn with obstacles big and small. Inward-looking, painfully awkward, desperately lonely and deeply earnest, Marimuthu is fuelled by constant rejection into an unforgettable and transformative matrimonial quest. Enter a series of marriage brokers, horoscopes, infatuations, refusals and 'bride-seeing' expeditions gone awry, which lead Marimuthu to a constant re-evaluation of his marital prospects. But this is no comedy of manners, and before long we find ourselves reckoning with questions of agricultural change, hierarchies of caste, the values of older generations and the grim antecedents of Marimuthu's poor prospects, as decades of sex-selective abortion have destroyed the fabric of his community and its demographics. Perumal Murugan's Resolve is both a cultural critique and a personal journey: in his hands, the question of marriage turns into a social contract, deeply impacted by the ripple effects of patriarchy, inequality and changing relationships to land and community. In this deceptively comic tale that savagely pierces the very heart of the matter, translated with deft moments of lightness and pathos by Aniruddhan Vasudevan, Perumal Murugan has given us a novel for the ages.
