Gibbs was chosen as one of the five accredited correspondents for Allied Forces during the war. As a result of his contributions, he was made a Knight of the Order of the British Empire in 1920. He died in March 1962. In many ways Philip Gibbs is the archetypal male middlebrow writer of the inter-war period. Immensely prolific, he appealed strongly to the thoughtful decent middle class, worried about the way the world was going and wary of extremes."
