" Le 29 janvier 1669, la plus jolie fille de France, Mlle de Sévigné, épousa, d'après ce qu'écrivit sa mère à Bussy-Rabutin, non pas le plus joli garçon, mais un des plus honnêtes hommes du royaume, M. de Grignan. D'origine méridionale, la famille de Grignan occupait depuis longtemps en Provence les postes les plus élevés. Des chevaliers de ce nom avaient figuré à la première croisade. Vers le XIe siècle, le seigneur de Monteil Aimar ou Adhémar, un des ancêtres des Grignan, qui a donné son nom à la ville de Montélimart, possédait plus de vingt lieues de terres sur la rive gauche du Rhône. Un de ses descendais, Guilhem Adhémar, a marqué sa place au premier rang des troubadours provençaux. Sous François Ier, un comte Adhémar de Grignan fut pendant quelques années gouverneur de Provence. Vers le même temps, la maison de Castellane, l'une des plus anciennes et des plus illustres de la Provence, vint se fondre dans celle de Grignan-Adhémar. Bien qu'elle eût déjà beaucoup perdu de son importance, de sa splendeur et de ses richesses, la famille de Grignan jouissait pourtant encore au XVIIe siècle d'un grand crédit. En 1669, un Grignan était archevêque d'Arles, un autre évoque d'Uzès. C'étaient les frères cadets de François de Castellane-Adhémar d'Ornano, comte de Grignan, le gendre de Mme de Sévigné..."

On a bientôt fait de dire que les scandales de la régence et de Louis XV sont les causes principales de la révolution de 1789. L'orage venait de plus loin; il était en germe dans les institutions despotiques du règne précédent, dans les excès de la réglementation et la désorganisation des municipalités, au moins autant que dans l'inégalité des charges publiques et l'opposition systématique des diverses classes à toute sorte d'améliorations. Le régent et Louis XV eussent-ils possédé toutes les vertus qui leur manquaient, la catastrophe eût tout au plus été retardée. Sans remonter plus loin, qu'on se reporte au premier manifeste de la fronde, et l'on verra ce que les esprits éclairés, les politiques du temps pensaient de l'organisation des pouvoirs..."
