Ce titre « Étude psychologique de la personnalité » me rappelle à moi-même un petit souvenir un peu émotionnant: cela a été le premier titre de mes cours au Collège de France. En décembre 1895, quand j'ai eu l'honneur de prendre la suppléance du cours de Ribot, j'avais pris comme titre de mes cours « Étude de la Personnalité ». C'était un sujet que Ribot lui-même m'avait indiqué. Il trouvait qu'il était bien d'accord avec mes études précédentes sur les somnambulismes, sur les doubles existences, qu'il était bien à la mode, et il me disait qu'il plairait aux auditeurs, qu'il les intéresserait."
