Les deux chattes dont je vais conter l'histoire s'associent dans mon souvenir à quelques années relativement heureuses de ma vie. - Oh ! des années toutes récentes, mon Dieu, si on les considère dates en main, mais des années qui semblent déjà lointaines, emportées avec la vitesse toujours de plus en plus effroyable du temps, et qui, vues ainsi dans le passé, se colorent presque de derniers reflets d'aube, de dernières lueurs roses de matin et de commencement, en comparaison de l'heure grise présente, - tant nos jours se hâtent de s'assombrir, tant notre chute est rapide dans la nuit... Pierre Loti. Ce fut à la fin de la guerre là-bas, un de ces soirs de bagarre qui étaient fréquents alors. Je ne sais comment cette petite bête affolée, sortie de quelque jonque en désarroi, sautée à bord de notre bateau par terreur, vint chercher asile dans ma chambre, sous ma couchette. Elle était jeune, pas encore de taille adulte, minable, efflanquée, plaintive, ayant sans doute, comme ses parents et ses maîtres, vécu chichement de quelques têtes de poisson avec un peu de riz cuit à l'eau. Et j'en eus tant de pitié que je commandai à mon ordonnance de lui préparer une pâtée et de lui offrir à boire. D'un air humble et reconnaissant, elle accepta ma prévenance, - et je la vois encore s'approchant avec lenteur de ce repas inespéré, avançant une patte, puis l'autre, ses yeux clairs tout le temps fixés sur les miens pour s'assurer si elle ne se trompait pas, si bien réellement c'était pour elle... Le lendemain matin, par exemple, je voulus la mettre à la porte. Après lui avoir fait servir un déjeuner d'adieu, je frappai dans mes mains très fort, en trépignant des deux pieds à la fois, comme il est d'usage en pareil cas, et en disant d'un ton rude: Allez-vous-en, petite Moumoutte ! Mais non, elle ne s'en allait pas, la chinoise. Évidemment, elle n'avait aucune frayeur de moi, comprenant par intuition que c'était très exagéré, tout ce bruit. Comment faire ? Je ne pouvais pourtant pas établir une chatte à demeure dans ma chambre de bord. Et surtout une bête si vilaine et si maladive, quel encombrement pour l'avenir !... Alors je la pris à mon cou, avec mille égards toutefois et en lui disant même: Je suis bien fâché, ma petite Moumoutte, - mais je l'emportai résolument dehors, à l'autre bout de la batterie, au milieu des matelots qui, en général, sont hospitaliers et accueillants pour les chats quels qu'ils soient. Tout aplatie contre les planches du pont, et la tête retournée vers moi pour m'implorer toujours avec son regard de prière, elle se mit à filer, d'une petite allure humble et drôle, dans la direction de ma chambre, où elle fut rentrée la première de nous deux; quand j'y revins après elle, je la trouvai tapie obstinément dans son même petit coin, et ses yeux étaient si expressifs que le courage me manqua pour la chasser de nouveau.- Voilà comment cette chinoise me prit pour maître. This Is A New Release Of The Original 1890 Edition.

First English translation of La Galilee, an account of Pierre Loti's travels in the Holy Land from Jerusalem to Beirut, via Damascus and many other interesting places, in 1894. Pierre Loti (1850-1923) was born Louis-Marie-Julien Viaud into a Protestant family in Rochefort in Saintonge, South-West France (now Charente Maritime). He was an officer of the French Navy and a prolific author of considerable note in 19th-/early-20th-century France, publishing many novels and numerous accounts of his travels around the world. He was a member of the French Academy. Apart from his literary talents, Loti was a pioneer photographer and this translation of his journey from Jerusalem to Beirut in 1894 is greatly enhanced by the reproduction of some of the photographs he took at the time.. Volume includes a number historic photos taken by Pierre Loti and 1 map.
