A cet âge tout est vision pour l'enfant, ses impressions sont presque des rêves. Au moment où il allait raisonner et classer ces impressions, on le dépaysa brusquement, on le transporta dans l'Inde, la terre des merveilles et des monstres, on lui donna pour ainsi dire une seconde enfance. Puis il repartit pour l'Europe, mais à peine passa-t-il un an au collège d'Éton. Ses parents firent un grand voyage à travers le continent, il les accompagna. Deux ans il roula, - l'expression est de lui, - de France en Allemagne, d'Allemagne en Suisse, et de Suisse en Italie. Nouvelles visions, qui se peignaient dans un cerveau parfaitement vierge de tout enseignement d'école. Lawrence apprit à regarder, à imaginer, jamais à raisonner. Ceci sert beaucoup à expliquer son étrange carrière. Lui-même a appelé cette façon originale d'acquérir la connaissance l'éducation par contact. Ajoutez que les choses qu'il voyait étaient de nature à frapper son imagination. On était en 1847, au moment où l'Italie cherchait à secouer la domination de l'Autriche, où le sentiment de l'unité nationale naissait de la haine qu'inspiraient l'étranger et les petits gouvernements qui s'appuyaient sur lui. Lawrence vit quelque part le peuple soulevé dresser des échelles contre la maison de la légation autrichienne, abattre les armes impériales et les fouler aux pieds...
