Le due frottole di Pietro Aretino sono separate da poche settimane di differenza. Ma in mezzo scorre il fiume infernale del sacco di Roma. La prima, il Coriero mandato da Venere a cercare l'Amore, fu scritta a Mantova nel marzo del 1527 ed è una farsa, ovvero un componimento teatrale per voce sola destinato ad allietare una festa di corte (anche se poi si trasforma in uno sboccato pamphlet satirico). La seconda, la Frottola di maestro Pasquino, spedita al marchese di Mantova nel luglio di quello stesso anno, quando ormai l'Aretino si era rifugiato a Venezia, è la sua più grandiosa e diabolica pasquinata, quella che fece piangere di rabbia papa Clemente VII quando la lesse, prigioniero dei suoi nemici in Castel Sant'Angelo. Nei suoi versi il sacco di Roma si converte in un macabro e grottesco carnevale che non trova confronti nella nostra letteratura.
I Sonetti lussuriosi sono per eccellenza il libro maledetto di Pietro Aretino. Oggetto di una distruzione sistematica dopo che tutta l'opera dell'autore era stata messa all'indice dei libri proibiti, si diffusero in edizioni clandestine sempre più corrotte e contaminate di testi spurii, tanto che ancora oggi si continuano a stampare repliche indegne. La nuova edizione critica riveduta e corretta tiene conto di un manoscritto finora inedito e di una nuova datazione dell'editio princeps (non 1527 ma 1537). Ricostruisce la storia del testo, liberandola da tutti i cascami leggendari che si sono accumulati nel tempo, a partire dalla prima idea, che nasce nel 1525 da una sorta di commento poetico a 16 incisioni erotiche di Marcantonio Raimondi (su disegni di Giulio Romano), alla prima edizione del 1537, interamente perduta, fino alla sola cinquecentina di cui ci sia pervenuto un esemplare, purtroppo corrotto e mutilato, che si cerca di sanare e integrare sulla scorta della tradizione ulteriore. Nuova edizione riveduta e corretta.
