" La poésie est réputée faite seulement pour charmer, et ne trouve le lecteur disposé à aucun effort. J'avoue que ces pages ne visent point à charmer; elles visent à intéresser certains esprits anxieux, et ne peuvent se lire sans quelque attention. Peut-être ne m'accordera-t-on pas que j'aie fait oeuvre de poésie; j'aurais toutefois fait oeuvre d'art, si mes vers étaient jugés bons. Le vers est en effet la forme la plus apte à consacrer ce que l'écrivain lui confie, et l'on peut, je crois, lui confier, outre tous les sentiments, presque toutes les idées. J'essaye donc cette forme sur une matière moins concrète que ne l'est d'ordinaire celle de la poésie. Selon l'opinion commune, la poésie perd ses caractères propres dès que le sujet traité cesse d'être aisément accessible aux esprits de moyenne culture. J'ai plus d'ambition pour mon art: il me semble qu'il n'y a, dans le domaine entier de la pensée, rien de si haut ni de si profond, à quoi le poète n'ait mission d'intéresser le coeur. Si j'ai trop présumé de mes forces, je retournerai de bonne grâce à des compositions moins difficiles pour moi, mais sans regret de ma témérité, car on ne peut nier l'utilité d'éprouver la puissance d'un art et d'en chercher les limites."

" Que les géomètres sont heureux ! Leurs querelles ne sauraient durer, celles des artistes sont interminables. C'est que les premiers doivent définir ce dont ils parlent, tandis que les seconds croient pouvoir s'en dispenser. À vrai dire, dans une large mesure, ils n'y sont pas tenus: presque toujours l'objet de leur dispute échappe à toute définition, parce qu'il relève immédiatement de la sensibilité. Ce qu'il y a de personnel dans leur manière de sentir, la raison d'être de leurs oeuvres, ce qui en fait le prix, l'originalité, ne peut se traduire que par leurs oeuvres mêmes. Aussi rien n'est-il plus vain, plus décevant que de leur demander l'exacte formule de leurs aspirations; quand ils la donnent, elle n'est pas précise et n'est guère intelligible que pour eux-mêmes. Dans la polémique leur situation est bien différente de celle des géomètres. Pour peu qu'ils soient consciencieux et modestes, elle devient fort désavantageuse. Ils ne se dissimulent pas que leur foi manque, par essence, de fondement rationnel, et le respect même qu'ils ont de leur idéal les empêche de le livrer mal défini à une discussion qui l'offense; enfin leur défiance d'eux-mêmes accroît leur impuissance à se faire comprendre. Au contraire, s'ils sont affranchis de tous ces scrupules, ils ont beau jeu. Il leur suffit d'émettre un programme de principes et, pour l'autoriser, de déclarer qu'ils sentent ce qu'ils affirment; personne n'est en mesure ni en droit de contester des assertions de cette origine..."
