Dr. Ray Smith is the saxophonists'' saxophonist, the teachers'' teacher. His 50+ years of saxophone playing and teaching have prepared him well to bring together perhaps the greatest breadth of practical saxophone information ever assembled under one book cover in The Science and Art of Saxophone Teaching. This book is valuable to saxophone teachers and serious saxophone students alike covering such topics as basic tone production (embouchure, oral cavity, breath support) and solving problems with tone, playing low notes, slurring down over intervals, solving reed issues, saxophone repair and adjustments, coordinating classical and jazz study and practice, warmup exercises and practice routines, articulation basics and articulation styles, development of technique and speed, choosing fingerings, solving vibrato issues, working on intonation problems, playing dynamics, rhythmic development, learning altissimo (may be worth the price of the book alone), phrasing musically, choosing good breathing places, working with ornamentation and cadenzas, dealing with differences between styles, becoming a multilingual musician, doubling other woodwind instruments and helpful information on clarinet, flute and double reeds, dealing with stage fright, and much more. This volume belongs in the library of every earnest saxophonist. There are also a series of video tutorials on a coordinated YouTube channel that bring all the concepts to life.Ray has been blessed to be a master pedagogue and is sharing in this book the concepts, insights, and approaches he has used to help countless young players become great saxophonists and musicians. His track record as a professor at Brigham Young University is enviable. His students teach at many of the nations'' universities, perform in the Broadway pits, play in the service bands of the Army, Navy, and Marines, and write for Hollywood movies. One is playing with the Dukes of Dixieland, and one is currently holding down the first tenor chair in the famed University of North Texas 1 O''Clock Lab Band. Ray, himself, a disciple of Eugene Rousseau, is a fine performer and well-recorded artist. He is equally at home in classical and jazz-related styles and adept at all five woodwind instruments. He has been heard frequently on the airwaves of this country (ESPN, ABC, NBC, CNN, etc.), on movies such as The Sandlot and The Swan Princess, and on Television series such as He-Man: Masters of the Universe, Xena, and Hercules.

In the confusion and tumult of a single moment, he exposes his deepest secret to his best friend, only to lose him - and all of his friends when his secret spreads through the school. He becomes an outcast. Then he moves.High school starts in just a couple of months, and he hasn't even adjusted to his new home yet, when his parents send him off to a summer study camp for kids entering high school. Camp Howitt offers numerous opportunities, but Alex finds that the best one isn't listed in the brochure. He learns quite a bit about himself - more than he could have ever expected. And he loses more than he'd ever had before. Before Alex met Tom, Jeff, and the gang, his life was no simpler. In fact, it was just as trying and confusing. In ways, even more so. How did he discover that he was gay? What was the mysterious 'thing that happened that never happened'? Who were his first loves, even before Toby? These and other questions are answered. *Contains explicit sexual content." The earliest story of Alex Raymond yet, and it doesn't disappoint! Many undiscussed events hinted at in the massive Circle books are answered, and they were worth the wait! Ray Smith may have created one of the most endearing and exciting young protagonists in gay teen stories ever! And this early installment of that character's history is a must-read!" an obviously unattributed quote.
A gay teen, coming-of-age romance with spiritual and religious overtones that stands on its own, though the first part of a trilogy. 287K words / 498 pages Alex is turning sixteen, and he thinks he knows all there is about life, love, and loss. Sixteen is already a stressful age, but attending high school in one of Chicago's most affluent suburbs makes life that much more difficult for him. That Alex is one of the 'lessers' only makes it that much harder, as do the facts that he's a brainy dork, and gay. His best friend knows that Alex is gay, but none of his other friends do, not even the one that Alex has had strong feelings for since before meeting Toby over two years ago. He feels that he has finally come to grips with his sexuality, and has even known love, but after losing Toby to illness and death over the previous summer, he is unsure and afraid - what's the point of falling in love, if it's only going to be taken away, whether by an uncaring God or fickle fate? And now Toby returns, in a way. Alex isn't sure if he's going insane, or if there is more to life and death than he ever suspected. A very special gift on his birthday to deadly events that will change the lives of Alex, his family, and his friends, and deepen their ties together. They will all learn that there is much more to life and the universe than any of them suspected. Some things said about THE CIRCLE "As soon as I finished I went back and started over!" "Alex and his friends are in my head! I can't get them out and I don't want them out! I want sequels! Now!" "The Circle did what a great story should do. I cried, I laughed, I smiled, I got angry, I loved it!" "Late nights, late mornings, lost meals all attest to the magnetic almost hypnotic spell it held me in. Now that its over I don't know how to feel except as if my best friends all moved away!" "Thank you for a long, complex story worth the time to read. The characters are believable, as is the story. It is full of emotions, from simple fun to the complications of love and hate. Well done!" "Wow. What more can I say? Fell into the story and had to keep reading to the end to climb back out. Beautifully written, deeply moving. I laughed and I cried as I fell in love with the guys." "I thank you for writing it. I was captivated by the storyline and spent all my spare time in the last week reading it. I enjoyed every chapter, and I'm happy it was there for me to enjoy." "I am in tears as I write this. The story kept my attention through the whole thing. I couldn't stop reading and I felt so badly for Alex's pain. .... I wanted so much to reach through the screen and take it all away." "I don't think I have ever written an author of any kind before, but I can't resist complimenting you for The Circle, which has to be absolutely the most realistic, absorbing story I can remember ever seeing. It's one of those that you literally have to tear yourself away from!" "I am practically overwhelmed. The more I read, the better it got. And it just got better, and Better, and BETTER! I laughed, and I cried. I rejoiced, and I wept. Openly. And now that I'm done, I don't really have words to describe my ultimate feelings. Overwhelmed? Well perhaps; it's indeed a memorable and extraordinarily moving tale. Well done!" "First off, I should say that I'm mad as hell at you for bringing to life Alex and his pals with such realism that I felt angry and upset when they were hurting. Alex and the guys are in my head now, almost like renters. I see them as clearly as my own reflection, mostly pointing and giggling like there's some immense prank about to be offloaded. Young, deep, fascinated by life and full of both wondrous imagination and emotional strength and wisdom drawn from common sense and an ability to embrace the truths of life without letting them overwhelm. And completely living in the moment, loving spiritually, sticking together. Pals."

Written by a jazz teacher for jazz teachers, The Real Jazz Pedagogy Book is based on the premise that successful jazz teachers must be constantly working four main areas: 1) the wind instruments-including tone production, intonation, and section playing skills; 2) playing styles correctly-such as rhythmic and time feel approach, articulation approach, and phrasing; 3) the rhythm section-playing the instruments, time feel and concept, coordination of comping, harmonic voicings, drum fills and setups, stylistic differences; and 4) the soloists-developing improvisational skills (both right brain and left brain), jazz theory, the ballad soloist, and the vocal soloist. Ray Smith, who has taught and directed jazz ensembles, including the acclaimed Brigham Young University group, Synthesis, and given private lessons for over forty years, also discusses the details of running school programs. Smith's YouTube channel complements The Real Jazz Pedagogy Book.
The provocative and elaborate serigraphy of radical American artist, educator and Catholic nun, Corita KentRadical American artist, educator and Catholic nun, Corita Kent's (1918-86) provocative and elaborate serigraphy has entranced audiences for over four decades. Originally completed in 1968, Kent's International Signal Code Alphabet encompasses a series of 26 kaleidoscopic serigraphs integrating scripture, typography, image, icon and the maritime flags of the International Code of Signals. As 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of both the series' completion and the centennial of Kent's birth, this celebratory publication, produced in collaboration with the Corita Art Center, reproduces for the first time the International Signal Code Alphabet in this handsome and eye-grabbing yellow clothbound volume. An informative introduction written by Corita Art Center Director, Ray Smith, and a foreword authored by artist and curator Aaron Rose accompany the serigraphs.
The Lord Nelson Tavern: a Halifax watering hole in the early 1960s. The group of young university students who hang out therea ramshackle coterie of aspiring artists, economists, poets, and philosopherscome together to gossip and ponder the big questions of art and life, all the while pining after the vain and untouchable Francesca.Though these friends soon drift apart, their early rivalries, jealousies and conquests will continue to reverberate. In the novels seven interlocking sequences, Ray Smith explores the often decisive and even fatal impact of seemingly innocuous choices upon the course of our lives. With unforgettable scenes that marry the sacred and the profane, and with structural innovations that recall the works of Barthelme and Nabokov, Lord Nelson Tavern is a must-read cult-classic of Canadian fiction.
Terrifying, powerful, slashing and satiric Century remains the most important work of Ray Smith's oeuvre.
A saga of perjury, speculation and perversion.
Set in the small German city of Waltherrott, this novel is a madcap excursion from the 1980s back to 1848, the year of revolutions, then back to the time of the Black Death in the late 1340s. A startling comedy, A Night at the Opera is a tour de force in the unexpected, the bizarre, and the serendipitous.
First published in 1969, Ray Smith's Cape Breton is the Thought-Control Centre of Canada remains as refreshing, innovative and important today as it has in every previous incarnation. Sophisticated, playful, crafted, sly, self-referential and extremely funny, it marks the beginning of a long and important, if unfortunately under appreciated, career by one of Canada's best humorists and innovative story-tellers.
