"Histoire Tragique de la Princesse Phénissa" est un roman écrit par Remy de Gourmont, un écrivain français du 19e et 20e siècle, publié en 1898. "Je mettrai en un volume mes rêveries philologiques et sémantiques" écrit Gourmont à Valéry en 1898. L'année suivante, il compose l'Esthétique de la langue française à partir d'articles publiés entre 1892 et 1899 dans des "petites revues". Il se détache de l'art symboliste, "personnel et individuel", pour orienter sa réflexion vers l'impersonnel de la langue et les lois qui la régissent. Tout en revendiquant "un sentiment esthétique assez violent", il place son essai sous le patronage des grands noms de la linguistique contemporaine et vise à "ajouter un nouveau principe à ceux qui guident l'étude des langues, le principe esthétique". Les objets dont il traite, les mots du français, la métaphore, le vers, la déformation et le cliché, sont saisis à la croisée de la langue et du style. Au XXe siècle, l'essai de Gourmont sera pour Jean Paulhan une stimulation constante dans sa réflexion sur la rhétorique et le langage."
