Hans opvækst på sine forældres lille gård skulle blive en afgørende inspirationskilde for hans forfatterskab og sansemættede skildringer af den frodige natur og livet på landet. Han var glødende optaget af naturbeskyttelse, længe inden dette var blevet et begreb. Hans righoldige forfatterskab, som spreder sig over mange genrer, rummer både seriøse naturstudier og fantasifuld fiktion. Blandt hans mest kendte værker er børnebogen Bevis (1882), selvbiografien The Story of My Heart (1883) og science fiction-romanen After London (1885), som hermed for første gang foreligger på dansk. The Observer har kaldt romanen ”en af victoriatidens smukkeste”. Gennem det meste af sit voksne liv kæmpede Richard Jefferies med tuberkulose. Han døde som 38-årig i 1887. I dag kan man besøge hans museum i Coate i det hus, han voksede op i.
