The fairy tales and legends of olden China have in common with the "Thousand and One Nights" an oriental glow and glitter of precious stones and gold and multicolored silks, an oriental wealth of fantastic and supernatural action. And yet they strike an exotic note distinct in itself. The seventy-three stories here presented after original sources, embracing "Nursery Fairy Tales," "Legends of the Gods," "Tales of Saints and Magicians," "Nature and Animal Tales," "Ghost Stories," "Historic Fairy Tales," and "Literary Fairy Tales," probably represent the most comprehensive and varied collection of oriental fairy tales ever made available for American readers. There is no child who will not enjoy their novel color, their fantastic beauty, their infinite variety of subject. Yet, like the "Arabian Nights," they will amply repay the attention of the older reader as well. Some are exquisitely poetic, such as "The Flower-Elves," "The Lady of the Moon" or "The Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden"; others like "How Three Heroes Came By Their Deaths Because Of Two Peaches," carry us back dramatically and powerfully to the Chinese age of Chivalry. The summits of fantasy are scaled in the quasi-religious dramas of "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" and "Notscha," or the weird sorceries unfolded in "The Kindly Magician." Delightful ghost stories, with happy endings, such as "A Night on the Battlefield" and "The Ghost Who Was Foiled," are paralleled with such idyllic love-tales as that of "Rose of Evening," or such Lilliputian fancies as "The King of the Ants" and "The Little Hunting Dog." It is quite safe to say that these Chinese fairy tales will give equal pleasure to the old as well as the young. They have been retold simply, with no changes in style or expression beyond such details of presentation which differences between oriental and occidental viewpoints at times compel. It is the writer's hope that others may take as much pleasure in reading them as he did in their translation.

A pesar de la diversidad de impresiones, interpretación y opinión expresadas por Wilhelm y Jung, la técnica de meditación descrita en El Secreto de la Flor De oro es una técnica sencilla, silenciosa (la descripción del libro de meditación ha sido caracterizada como Zen con detalles). La técnica de meditación, enunciada en lenguaje poético, se reduce a una fórmula sobre la postura, la respiración y la contemplación. La postura principalmente se relaciona con una posición recta. El camino de la energía asociado con la respiración ha sido descrito como semejante a una rueda interna alineada verticalmente con la columna vertebral. Das Tao Te King (Daodejing) ist eine Sammlung von Spruchkapiteln. Das Werk gilt als die Gründungsschrift des Daoismus, ein heiliger Text. Der heutige Titel des Werks "Das Buch vom Dao und vom De" verweist auf die beiden zentralen Begriffe der Weltanschauung von Laozi. Der Mensch könne die Wirkung des Dao auf zweierlei Weise erfahren: Zum einen, indem er die Erscheinungen der Welt beobachte und das Dao am Werke sehe; zum anderen, indem er seine Sinne abkehre und sich der Stille zuwende. Damit könne er sein Wesen sensibilisieren und das Dao geschehen lassen. Von der ersten Weise zeugen die zahlreichen Gleichnisse aus Natur und menschlicher Gesellschaft: Das Wasser bahnt sich seinen Weg, indem es nachgibt und unten bleibt. Ein Mensch, der viel besitzt, zieht Räuber und Feinde an. Die Welt unterliege stetigem Wandel. Darin sei ein grundlegendes und unveränderliches Gesetz wirksam, das Gesetz vom Ausgleich der Gegensätze. Weithin bekannt ist das Symbol Taiji, welches symbolisch Yin und Yang in einem Kreis vereinigt. Der Kreis selbst symbolisiert die Ureinheit dieser beiden Kräfte, welche bei Laozi dem Dao entspringt. Laozi ist ein legendärer chinesischer Philosoph, der im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gelebt haben soll. Laozi gilt als Begründer des Daoismus (Taoismus).

Richard Wilhelm (1873-1930) war ein deutscher Sinologe. Daneben war er Theologe und Missionar. Im Jahr 1899 brach Wilhelm im Dienste der Ostasienmission als Missionar in das Kaiserreich China auf. Durch seine pädagogische Tätigkeit lernte er traditionell gebildete chinesische Gelehrte kennen, die sein Verständnis der chinesischen Kultur und Geschichte vertieften, vor allem aber sein Studium der Schriften des klassischen chinesischen Altertums unterstützten. Neben den bekannten Übersetzungen der Texte des klassischen chinesischen Altertums, die immer wieder neu aufgelegt werden, steht aber noch eine Vielzahl von Arbeiten, in denen er sich aufmerksam und kritisch mit der chinesischen Gegenwart befasst. So veröffentlichte er Tagebuchaufzeichnungen über die zeitgenössischen Ereignisse und sein Leben und Arbeiten in Qingdao, aber auch ein Werk über chinesische Wirtschaftspsychologie, das eine durchaus praktische Zielsetzung hatte. Aus dem Buch: "In China rechnet man nach Jahrhunderten. Das war in der Vergangenheit stets die Losung der alten Kolonisten im Fernen Osten. Aber diese Losung ist längst zur Unwahrheit geworden. Heute entwickelt sich das Leben in China in fieberhafter Eile. Jeder Tag bringt neue Ereignisse und Entwicklungen, und hinter den lauten Tagesereignissen und Kämpfen vollzieht sich etwas ganz Großes: das Auftauchen einer neuen Welt. Ganz langsam und allmählich fing es an, aber mit immer wachsender Beschleunigung rollt das Rad des Geschehens weiter, dieses Rad der Wiedergeburt, das Altes, Überlebtes mit sich hinunter nimmt in die Unterwelt des Vergessens und Neues, nie Dagewesenes aus dem Nichts emporhebt. Aber das Neue ist nicht etwas, das ganz unvermittelt entstünde."
