You're going to get knocked down. Getting back up is what counts.Meet Tom O'Brien-disciplined, motivated, the star of his 1965 high school football team, and about to be recruited by Ohio State. But when Tom gets injured and is unable to play, he finds himself at a crossroads during a turbulent time in American history. With increasing self-doubt and uncertainty, he tries to reconcile the loss of a dream with the search for a new purpose.Tom journeys through a sharply divided country, from suburban Ohio and Kent State to Hawaii, Los Angeles, and beyond. He protests the Vietnam War, engages in intellectual debates, and experiments with different ways of life, reinventing not only his identity but also the values that shape his existence.Robert Johns's debut novel follows one young man's search for meaning, delving deep into the burgeoning counterculture, political upheaval, and generational divides that mark the late '60s and early '70s. O'Brien's Broken Play is an intensely human story of reframing the All-American dream and embracing an alternative fate.

Using official statistics, this book explores how the SNP managed to confound expectations and win a parliamentary majority in the 2011 Scottish General Election. How do voters in Britain decide which party to vote for in elections? Why do smaller parties get more support than they used to?How do the mass media influence political opinions? The authors examine these and other questions in the third edition of this popular text. They trace the evolution of the British electorate over the post-war period, and focus in particular on recent elections - from Labour's victories in the 2000s through to the hung parliament of 2010. As well as examining and explaining theories of party choice - including the view that voters' evaluations of government performance and party leaders are now the key determinants of election outcomes - the authors also devote separate chapters to turnout trends and patterns, electoral systems and the geography of party support. Campaigning, opinion polls and the mass media are also considered. Fully revised, the text incorporates the latest research on elections and voting behaviour, and includes analysis of recent trends and developments - including how 'new media' are affecting election campaigning.

Undermining the positions of the enemy is one of the most ancient activities. For almost 3000 years even before 1914, it was a popular siege-breaking technique. During the Great War arguably the greatest siege the world had ever seen, it presented a conflict environment that perfectly favored the skills of the military miner. During 1915, the Western Front was established as a static line that grew into a huge network of defense-in-depth earthworks. Siege conditions demanded siege tactics and as the ground was everywhere mineable, the Western Front was a prime candidate for underground warfare. Royal Engineer tunneling companies were specialist units of the Corps of Royal Engineers within the British Army, formed to dig attacking tunnels under enemy lines during the First World War. The Cornish Miners were one of these specialist units recruited from the tin mines of Cornwall. In February 1915, eight Tunneling Companies were created and operational in Flanders from March 1915. By mid-1916, the British Army had around 25,000 trained tunnelers, mostly volunteers taken from mining communities. This is their story.
