    Schon als kleiner Junge entspricht Elias Alder nicht den Normen der vorarlbergischen Dorfgemeinschaft Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er hat eine hohe Stimme und sonderbar gelbe Augen. Seine Mutter lehnt ihn ab, sperrt ihn ein. Nach einem Schlüsselerlebnis, währenddessen der Fünfjährige eine Verschärfung des Gehörs erfährt, pubertiert er vor der Zeit. Schon da kann er den Herzschlag der noch lange nicht geborenen Elsbeth, der großen späteren Liebe, vernehmen. Elias besitzt eine sehr hohe Begabung für die Musik. Er bildet sich an der heimischen Orgel selbst aus und bereitet der Gemeinde regelmäßig außerordentliche Musikerlebnisse. Sein Handeln und seine Musik werden dabei von der stetig wachsenden Liebe zu Elsbeth bestimmt.
