Schon als kleiner Junge entspricht Elias Alder nicht den Normen der vorarlbergischen Dorfgemeinschaft Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er hat eine hohe Stimme und sonderbar gelbe Augen. Seine Mutter lehnt ihn ab, sperrt ihn ein. Nach einem Schlüsselerlebnis, währenddessen der Fünfjährige eine Verschärfung des Gehörs erfährt, pubertiert er vor der Zeit. Schon da kann er den Herzschlag der noch lange nicht geborenen Elsbeth, der großen späteren Liebe, vernehmen. Elias besitzt eine sehr hohe Begabung für die Musik. Er bildet sich an der heimischen Orgel selbst aus und bereitet der Gemeinde regelmäßig außerordentliche Musikerlebnisse. Er studierte Komposition, Theaterwissenschaft und Kunstgeschichte in Wien. Mit seinem Debüt-Roman „Schlafes Bruder" (1992), dem ersten Teil seiner „Rheintalischen Trilogie", gelang ihm der internationale Erfolg. Schneider wurde mit zahlreichen in- und ausländischen Preisen ausgezeichnet und der Roman in 24 Sprachen übersetzt; außerdem wurde das Buch verfilmt und diente als Vorlage für eine Oper. 1998 folgte der Roman „Die Luftgängerin" und 2000 als Abschluss der Trilogie „Die Unberührten".
