Dans cette Nouvelle genevoise Töpffer ravive avec beaucoup d'humour des épisodes de sa jeunesse espiègle, se moque de lui-même, et nous peint souvent avec émotion les trois figures féminines qui ont marqué sa vie d'écolier, de jeune juriste récalcitrant et de peintre devenu renommé. La Nouvelle est plein d'humour car le jeune homme est un rêveur a qui il arrive des catastrophes car il est distrait, tout à ses amours plutôt qu'à en prévoir les conséquences. L'histoire n'a rien à voir avec le titre; on comprend ce dernier à la fin.
Le docteur Festus, ayant hésité entre l'âne et le cheval et, finalement choisi un mulet, se met en route pour son voyage d'instruction. Voici le récit, cocasse et mouvementé, de ses tribulations... Ces aventures sont strictement réservées à ceux qui aiment les «fictions d'une surprenante absurdité», les «incongruités que le bon goût réprouve» et les «incorrections de langage propres à faire frémir les puristes»... Entre Rabelais et Jarry, cette fantaisie totalement débridée, bien que génevoise, est également un pamphlet sociopolitique.Rodolphe Töpffer, né à Genève le 12 pluviôse an VII à dix heures après midi et mort dans cette même ville le 8 juin 1846, est un pédagogue, écrivain, homme politique et auteur de bande dessinée suisse, considéré comme le créateur et le premier théoricien de cet art.
