At the start of the Great War Charles Gordon then 18 years old volunteered for service in the army. He fought on the Western Front against the Germans and and Salonica against the Turks. When he was demobilised he joined the London Metropolitan Police and stayed with the force through the Second World War and the blitz. In 1945 he was seconded to the German Control Commission.

The incentive for preparing this book about the lives of two eighteenth century adventurers came out of a project to restore, in 1994, the Devon Historic Buildings Trust's "Haldon Belvedere" or "Lawrence Tower". The building is a remnant of an estate that bubbled with activity during the second half of the seventeeth century following the return to England from India of Major General Stringer Lawrence and Sir Robert Palk. The building is open to the public and visitors often ask about the history of the building and the reason for its existence and they always wish to know more than is available from current easily- accessible literature.

Julius Edmund Goodwyn joined the army as an ensign and after 45 years of service retired as a Major General. He was a brilliant commander and leader of men. Much of his fame came from the Crimean War where he was wounded and decorated.

The story of Dr John Howard Norton richly deserves to be told. He was one of those very rare people who deserve the epithet polymath. After a busy period as a GP he was a pioneer in the treatment of lunacy who opened a lunatic asylum in the old Amroth Castle and joined the family firms working in the brewing industry and in the operation of the Crosshands Colliery in Wales.

Life in Swansea before, during and after the second world war when the author moved to Maidstone in Kent, England. Family connections have been traced and their origins researched. This is the first of three books describing the author's life and work.
