    At the start of the Great War Charles Gordon then 18 years old volunteered for service in the army. He fought on the Western Front against the Germans and and Salonica against the Turks. When he was demobilised he joined the London Metropolitan Police and stayed with the force through the Second World War and the blitz. In 1945 he was seconded to the German Control Commission.
