This is the sixth volume in the Series Olympics at War, and the third volume detailing Olympic Athletes serving in the Second World War. Some were soldiers and sailors who competed as athletes. Some were athletes who served in the military during wartime. All of them were extraordinary athletes whose talents raised them to Olympic heights. Some competed in several Olympics, some only once. Many set records and were awarded Olympic Medals. Others earned medals of a different sort on the battlefields of Europe, Africa, Asia and at sea. Some survived the war, some didn't. The stories include an Olympian who saved the Lipizzaner white stallions from the Russians, the subject of a Walt Disney Movie, a Bulgarian cavalry commander, a canoeist who won Canada's only Gold Medal at the 1936 Games, A Finnish ski champion, a German General and Corps Commander, and the American who shot a perfect score in the Pentathlon. They also include the German equestrian who competed in the jumping event with his arm in a sling, to later be murdered by the NKVD, the British polo player who later became Commandant of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, a founder of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a Hungarian who coached the British Olympian Equestrian team to a Gold Medal, A Dutch field hockey player murdered by the Japanese, a Philippine graduate of the US Naval Academy, killed by guerrillas, and a Polish riding instructor killed in the "Katyn Massacre", as were a number of Polish Olympians. Some names will be well-known, others are more obscure, but all have stories to tell.

Charlie thought building a spaceship had been tough, so being king should be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, it was like a cake made of cement. Hard to chew, and just might kill him.It was good being king, or so Charlie had believed. Life in deep space could be a drag sometimes, but Daisy supposed things could have been worse. They were still alive, after all, which was always a plus in her book. It had been one hell of a way to start the day--being rudely snapped from a deep cryo-sleep, and in the middle of a ship-wide crisis to boot--but Daisy was pleased to note that the ship had not decompressed, the crew hadn't been blasted into space, and, most importantly, they hadn't simply blown up. At least not yet. So, they had that going for them, but being stuck on a damaged ship in the inky depths of space as it limped toward Earth was not exactly the relaxing trip home she'd imagined. With the powerful AI supercomputer guiding the craft beginning to show some disconcerting quirks of its own, and its unsettling cyborg assistant nosing into her affairs, Daisy's unease was rapidly growing. Add to the mix a crew of mechanically-enhanced humans, any one of whom she suspected might not be what they seemed, and Daisy found herself with a sense of pending dread tickling the periphery of her mind. Something was very much not right--she could feel it in her bones. The tricky part now was going to be figuring out what the threat was, before it could manifest from a mere sinking feeling in her gut into a potentially deadly reality.

Wearing nothing but psych ward pajamas and fluffy slippers, the odd girl wasn't really dressed to kill. Being the Grim Reaper, however, she felt confident she could make it work. Have you ever had one of those days? You know, the kind of day when things just don't go your way. Like when your botched suicide attempt and claims of supernatural powers get you hauled to the emergency room, placed under observation, then transferred to a locked-down psych facility. The girl who thought she was Death had failed miserably in her efforts to shed the troublesome human body in which she was trapped. The result? Finding herself surrounded by nutjobs, locked in a mental ward ruled by a humorless doctor with a Napoleon complex and a penchant for sleight of hand. Sure, she did technically bring it on herself, but how was she to know that trying to off herself in public and using her outside voice to proclaim she was Death incarnate would result in a psych ward lockdown? With that problematic little blunder behind her, the concerns now vexing her were pressing. Escape, both from the mental hospital, as well as from this plane of existence, was vital, but equally so was addressing the other issue haunting her. The big one. The one that could end the world. The issue that with Death missing, people would rather inconveniently no longer die like they were supposed to. Eventually, things would hit critical mass. She just didn't know when. The situation was, well, grim, to say the very least. An irony not lost on the girl claiming to be the Death.

The award of a military decoration or medal does not define valor, it only recognizes it. The men and women in this volume did incredible things, and although in many cases there was the official awarding of medals, their stories remain unknown and untold. This book is a modest attempt to correct that oversight.
