""The Validity of American Ideals"" is a book written by Shailer Mathews in 1922. The book explores the fundamental principles that underpin American society and democracy. Mathews argues that American ideals, such as freedom, equality, and justice, are not only essential to the American way of life but are also universal values that should be upheld by all nations. The book is divided into four sections, each exploring a different aspect of American ideals. The first section examines the historical and philosophical roots of American democracy, tracing its origins back to the Enlightenment and the founding fathers. The second section explores the role of religion in American society and how it has influenced American ideals. The third section discusses the challenges that America faces in upholding its ideals, including issues of race, class, and gender. Mathews argues that while America has made progress in these areas, there is still much work to be done. The final section of the book explores the future of American ideals and how they can continue to shape American society in the years to come. Overall, ""The Validity of American Ideals"" is a thought-provoking book that challenges readers to think deeply about the values that underpin American society. Mathews argues that these ideals are not just important for America but are essential for the survival of democracy and freedom around the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The Messianic Hope In The New Testament is a book written by Shailer Mathews that explores the concept of the Messiah in the New Testament. The book is divided into two parts: the first part focuses on the historical and cultural context of the Messianic hope in ancient Judaism, while the second part examines the New Testament texts that deal with the Messiah.Mathews argues that the Messianic hope was a central theme in ancient Judaism and that it played a crucial role in the development of the New Testament. He explores the various ways in which the Messiah was understood in ancient Jewish literature and how these ideas were incorporated into the New Testament. The book also examines the different ways in which the Messiah is portrayed in the New Testament, including as a suffering servant, a political leader, and a divine figure. Mathews argues that these different portrayals reflect the diversity of early Christian beliefs about the Messiah.Overall, The Messianic Hope In The New Testament provides a comprehensive and insightful analysis of the Messianic hope in both ancient Judaism and the New Testament. Shailer Mathews (May 26, 1863 - October 23, 1941) was a liberal Christian theologian, involved with the Social Gospel movement. Born in Portland, Maine, and graduated from Colby College. Mathews was a progressive, advocating social concerns as part of the Social Gospel message, and subjecting Biblical texts to scientific study, in opposition to contemporary conservative Christians. He incorporated evolutionary theory into his religious views, noting that the two were not mutually exclusive.[1] He remained a devout Baptist for his entire life, and helped establish the Northern Baptist Convention, serving as its president in 1915. Mathews was a prolific author, served as president of the Chicago Society of Biblical Research twice (in 1898-1899 and 1928-1929), and also served as dean of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago (from 1908-1933). An endowed chair in his honor, the Shailer Mathews Professorship at the University of Chicago Divinity School, has recently been held by Franklin I. Gamwell and Hans Dieter Betz, and is currently held by Margaret M. Mitchell. His ashes are interred in the crypt of First Unitarian Church of Chicago.
