Imagine you are in a strange place, with no friends, no family, and no money. What would you do? The Champion in you arises and you survive. The Refresher, also known as Shawn Jackson, has endured homelessness, poverty, heartbreak, and imprisonment. After being stranded in Maine without family and friends, he found himself without a home. As a native of Hillsboro County, he always knew what family meant and thought it was something you were born into, but he soon learned it takes more than blood to make you family. Shawn's story is one of triumph, even when hope seems lost. When times got tough, Shawn relied on the strength of his grandmother, Lillie Mae Young. Read Shawn's story and you will find strength and motivation to keep going as you read it. You'll learn what it's like to live the life of a Gypsy Champion.
A couple years before the millennium, before the darkness really came; Shawn had a life-altering car accident that nearly killed him. This car accident was so severe; it placed him in a comatose state for a month and a half. After which, he endured months of rehabilitation and discovered losses. Through his losses he found a revolution of sorts, which he called The Darkness. You see, within his comatose state, he traveled within the realities of hell and the realities of heaven. Then one day, he woke up in the present reality, after living countless other lives on his journey within the coma. Something was different in him. Something in his spirit remembered being given a second chance to find who he really is and a chance to tell about the "Darkness" within the tunnel that everyone speaks of experiencing, when having a near death experience. Becoming a different person in result of his comatose experience, he speaks.

The individuals hail from different parts of the island and each face brings with it a unique story forever linked to the history of the island itself.
