Zu den am wenigsten erforschten Bereichen des deutschen Humanismus gehort die auf Vergils Eklogen zuruckgehende neulateinische Hirtendichtung. Einer der prominentesten deutschen Vertreter dieser Gattung ist - neben Eobanus Hessus, Euricius Cordus, Joachim Camerarius, Petrus Lotichius Secundus, Johannes Bocer u.a. - der bisher vor allem durch seine poetischen Invektiven gegen Luther bekannte Simon Lemnius (1511-1550) mit seinen "e;Bucolicorum aeglogae"e; (ca. 1550). Die vorliegende Edition ist ein erster Schritt zur Erschlieung und Dokumentation des Beitrags der deutschen Literaturgeschichte zu dieser in der Fruhen Neuzeit europaweit bis ins Barockzeitalter hinein auerst beliebten und auch in der Gelegenheitsdichtung in vielerlei Spielarten und zu vielerlei Zwecken (z.B. Furstenlob und Totenklage) extensiv kultivierten Gattung. Da eine Gesamtdarstellung der fruhneuzeitlichen deutschen Pastoraldichtung nicht existiert, wurde der Einleitung nebst einer knappen Einfuhrung in die Forschungsliteratur auch ein Uberblick uber die neulateinische deutsche Eklogendichtung von den Anfangen bei Heinrich Bebel (1472-1518) bis ungefahr zum letzten Viertel des 16. Jahrhunderts beigegeben. Die Darstellung, in der alle dem Herausgeber bekannten deutschen Eklogen-Verfasser aus diesem Zeitraum vertreten sind, gibt im Rahmen der Chronologie knappe Inhaltsangaben und Charakteristiken der erfaten Werke, verbunden mit bio-bibliographischen Hinweisen zu den einzelnen Autoren.
