Unequal distribution of income is one of the most important socio-economic issues. The processes of globalisation and integration are accelerating economic growth; however, at the same time, imbalances between regions are growing. Reducing inequalities within regions and national economies, as well as around the world, is important for individual and societal well-being and cohesion, and for effective state policies.This book investigates the problem of left-behind regions in the European Union. It first introduces the reader to the theories of regional imbalances and problems with measuring them. It then explores imbalances in the European Union using a variety of indicators and describes the EU's regional policy for reducing regional disparities. It uses an empirical shift-share analysis to assess the productivity of EU regions which are lagging behind. Value Added Tax (VAT) is the backbone of the EU Member States' tax systems. However, the rules for taxing Intra-Community delivery created opportunities for so called 'Missing Trader Intra-Community fraud' (MTIC). Together with the shadow economy, they represent VAT noncompliance, proxied by the so-called 'VAT gap'. The book explores the case of a severe VAT compliance crisis using the example of Poland. Although it has not experienced a recession after the Financial and Sovereign Debt Crises, the size of its 'VAT gap' reached the levels recorded by Greece - the hardest hit EU economy. The authors take a public policy perspective, examining the process of policy response formulation and implementation. They cover responses by the tax administration and legislative actions in the areas of tax, as well as criminal law.

The book provides a picture of the increasing significance of Central Europe and especially Poland in global production networks, discussing the underlying economic, social, and political factors. The key question it answers is to what extent the growth of production and exports results in industrial upgrading towards the manufacturing of more sophisticated high value-added products, new technologies, and the development of non-production functions, especially design and advanced service capabilities. The book shows that Central European manufacturing no longer exhibits the typical features of production activities in the periphery, in particular low density and diversity, low productivity, narrow specialisation in low value-added activities and poor local linkages, hence limited local value creation and value capture. There is still dependence on foreign-controlled enterprises in several sectors and limited product innovation, which remains a major weakness. Further, the book assesses the social consequences of the ongoing development of manufacturing capabilities in Poland and its impact on employment conditions including the quality of jobs and level of wages. Complex dynamics is one of the most fascinating subjects of study and research in mathematics. This third volume in the series entitled Non-Invertible Dynamical Systems not only examines topological and analytical properties of the iteration of rational functions on the Riemann sphere (in particular, the Fatou and Julia sets) but also focuses on thermodynamic, ergodic and fractal properties of these functions (notably, equilibrium states, Bowen's formula and Sullivan's conformal measures). This volume builds on the first two volumes in the series while simultaneously developing some methods and techniques specific to rational functions.

The book contains a detailed treatment of thermodynamic formalism on general compact metrizable spaces. Topological pressure, topological entropy, variational principle, and equilibrium states are presented in detail. Abstract ergodic theory is also given a significant attention. Ergodic theorems, ergodicity, and Kolmogorov-Sinai metric entropy are fully explored. Furthermore, the book gives the reader an opportunity to find rigorous presentation of thermodynamic formalism for distance expanding maps and, in particular, subshifts of finite type over a finite alphabet. It also provides a fairly complete treatment of subshifts of finite type over a countable alphabet. Transfer operators, Gibbs states and equilibrium states are, in this context, introduced and dealt with. Their relations are explored. All of this is applied to fractal geometry centered around various versions of Bowen's formula in the context of expanding conformal repellors, limit sets of conformal iterated function systems and conformal graph directed Markov systems. A unique introduction to iteration of rational functions is given with emphasize on various phenomena caused by rationally indifferent periodic points. Also, a fairly full account of the classicaltheory of Shub's expanding endomorphisms is given; it does not have a book presentation in English language mathematical literature.
