This book is a travel story, a journey through British history, an odyssey by road and foot, beginning in Edinburgh and finishing in Gloucester, 13 days later. The journey includes walking Hadrian's Wall, visiting significant historical sites in Northern England and Wales, and hiking in remote parts of Wales. The book is a narrative journey, accompanied by photographs that explore two millennia of British history. It begins with the Roman occupation of the island, the original British Kingdoms that emerged from the departure of Rome 400 years later, and their eventual demise at the hands of the Angles and Saxons. It explores the events that led to the birth of England, and the emergence of the Welsh and then British nations. It travels through historic sites including Iron Age hillforts, Roman forts, neolithic standing stones, significant battlefields, and historic churches. It tells stories of the history of each of these places, and the epic poems of the people who built them, lived in them and fought over them. Much of Britain's remaining history resides in its churches, abbeys and cathedrals, and for that reason, this book focuses on the history, architecture and stories that can be found in these ancient buildings. The author hopes that this story will inspire others to make journeys through the history of their nations.
Even champions were beginners once. Nobody really knows their potential as a sportsman or woman at the outset. But many people have absolutely no idea how to exercise or train for their chosen sport. Sometimes their coaches are inadeqately trained. Many are well meaning and enthusiastic amateurs, perhaps parents, with no knowledge of exercise physiology, sports psychology or biomechanics. What is biomechanics anyway? As a student Stephen Walker was the victim of such poor standards of sports coaching but this left him with a thirst for knowledge about the building blocks of success. Now, as a successful and still practising athlete and a coach with some 40+ years of experience, Walker has put down on paper what he has learned so you can benefit. This is no academic work with small print and even smaller references. This is your coach speaking to you from the page. "How to Win" spells out for you what you need to know to be successful in your sport - to WIN. And in the final analysis it is all very straight forward and boils down to just one word. But you would be surprised how many people do not realise this and are pursuing fitness training programmes that are actually going to hinder them instead of help them. Do you understand why training with heavy weights would make you slow, for example? If you are engaged in sport in any way, shape or form then you need to know everything that is in "How to Win". Invest now in your future success with this excellent handbook subtitled "The Sports Competitor's Guide to Success".

That started a 9-year downhill spiral.Back in the States, it was one illness and surgery after another, and two more knocks on death's door. Things got so bad, I had a brick wall built in front of my New York City brownstone bedroom window, without permission. My psychological report said: "Stephen is in urgent need of help. He could self-destruct at any moment." My brother Michael had left home totally stressed out. When he returned for a visit a completely different person, I was torn between jealousy and curiosity. I accepted an invite to visit him in Los Angeles. There, the most shocking awakening happened. Instantly, I felt amazing, and knew: ALL IS WELL. And my illnesses were gone! Now what? The answers are what this book is all about. All that and a happy marriage. Okay, Becky proposed, so who's perfect? During our 35th anniversary vow renewal, I surprised her by proposing on one knee with a diamond ring, as our family and friends cheered. She said YES!There are jewels in this book that can transform your life!

?This remarkable account of the 1961 race into space is a thrilling piece of storytelling. . . . It is high definition history: tight, thrilling and beautifully researched.??The Times, London, Front Page Lead Review?Beyond has the exhilaration of a fine thriller, but it is vividly embedded in the historic tensions of the Cold War, and peopled by men and women brought sympathetically, and sometimes tragically, to life.??Colin Thubron, author of Shadow of the Silk Road09.07 am. April 12, 1961. A top secret rocket site in the USSR. A young Russian sits inside a tiny capsule on top of the Soviet Union's most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile?originally designed to carry a nuclear warhead?and blasts into the skies. His name is Yuri Gagarin. And he is about to make history. Travelling at almost 18,000 miles per hour?ten times faster than a rifle bullet?Gagarin circles the globe in just 106 minutes. From his windows he sees the earth as nobody has before, crossing a sunset and a sunrise, crossing oceans and continents, witnessing its beauty and its fragility. While his launch begins in total secrecy, within hours of his landing he has become a world celebrity ? the first human to leave the planet.Beyond tells the thrilling story behind that epic flight on its 60th anniversary. It happened at the height of the Cold War as the US and USSR confronted each other across an Iron Curtain. Both superpowers took enormous risks to get a man into space first, the Americans in the full glare of the media, the Soviets under deep cover. Both trained their teams of astronauts to the edges of the endurable. In the end the race between them would come down to the wire.Drawing on extensive original research and the vivid testimony of eyewitnesses, many of whom have never spoken before, Stephen Walker unpacks secrets that were hidden for decades and takes the reader into the drama of one of humanity's greatest adventures ? to the scientists, engineers and political leaders on both sides, and above all to the American astronauts and their Soviet rivals battling for supremacy in the heavens.
The story of the bombing of Hiroshima presented in a new and dramatic way: a minute-by-minute account told from multiple perspectives, both in the air and on the groundBritish feature and documentary director Stephen Walker tells the story of the bombing of Hiroshima in a way only a filmmaker can--not as a dry history of the sad, regrettable, mission, but as an immediate and perilous drama. Walker has extensively interviewed American soldiers, Los Alamos scientists, and Japanese survivors that were involved in the bombing, and thus is able to tell the story through truly alive-on-the-page characters. The result is a narrative that--without either trivializing the tragedy of the bombing or ignoring its importance in WWII's end--tells the real story of why and how one of the most important events of the 20th century took place. Shockwave might not change anyone's opinion about the justification of the Hiroshima bombing, but it will provide readers with an unprecedented viewpoint that is sure to educate and enthrall its audience.
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to go into space. This book, published on the sixtieth anniversary of that epic flight, tells the astonishing story of how it happened, why it happened - and what happened next.
