Technically, twins are two children born about the same time from the same mother. Twins are more common than you'd think-about once in every ninety births. Twins can be either fraternal or identical. The former develop when two separate eggs are fertilized at about the same time. Identical twins are produced as the result of a single fertilized egg splitting in two. Each half develops as a separate fetus, but with identical genes. There are several additional twin anomalies: including so-called mirror image twins, who are identical, but in reverse. Ryan was the yang to Sean's ying. Even though they were identical, they were opposite. Ryan was right-handed, but Sean was left-handed. Ryan was an excellent student-not so with Sean. They were, however, inextricably bound together which is not surprising. There was nothing one wouldn't do for the other.

Bei den gegenwartigen Diskussionen iiber globalgeologische und petrologi­ sche Probleme des mittelatlantischen Riickens spielt Island eine ausschlagge­ bende Rolle. Gemessen an der Bedeutung der Vulkaninsel fUr diese zentralen Fragen sind die Gesteine Islands jedoch sehr selektiv erforscht. Relativ gut bekannt sind vor allem die Produkte der heute tatigen Vulkane. Uber den Chemismus, die mineralogische Zusammensetzung und den Autbau der prahistorischen und vor allem der tertiaren Vulkanite, welche die Offnung des Atlantiks miterlebt haben, sind wir jedoch bloss punktuell informiert. Riesige Areale der Insel bilden in petrographischer und petrochemischer Hinsicht heute noch «terra incognita». Da sich nur wenige Forscher dauemd mit dem Thema Island beschaftigen konnen und da sich diese Kollegen immer wieder Fragestellungen der Vulkaneruptionen des Tages zuwenden miissen, sollte sich die grosse Zahl von Erdwissenschaftem, welche die Insel fUr kurze Zeit besuchen, verpfiichtet flihlen, nach Moglichkeit Beitrage zu liefem und Liicken in unserer Kenntnis auszufUllen. In diesem Sinne ist unser Beitrag zu verstehen. Er entstand im Anschluss an Islandexkursionen in den Sommem 1971 und 1973 und befasst sich mit Material, das damals sowie auf friiheren Reisen des einen von uns (E. W.) gesammelt wurde. Die zwei genannten Exkursionen dienten der Einflihrung vorgeriickter Studierender und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter von schweizerischen Hochschulen in Probleme des Vulkanismus.
