George Leatrim is a novel written by Susanna Moodie, a Canadian author who is best known for her writings on pioneer life in Canada. The book tells the story of George Leatrim, a young man who is forced to leave his home in Ireland and emigrate to Canada in search of a better life. The story begins with George's childhood in Ireland, where he is raised by his mother and father on a small farm. However, when his father dies and the family falls on hard times, George is forced to leave his home and set out for Canada.Once in Canada, George faces many challenges as he tries to make a life for himself in a new and unfamiliar land. He struggles to find work and make ends meet, and he must also deal with the harsh realities of life in a pioneer community.Despite these challenges, George remains determined to succeed and eventually finds success as a farmer and businessman. Along the way, he also falls in love and starts a family, but he must also confront the prejudices and injustices of the society in which he lives.Overall, George Leatrim is a compelling and inspiring story of one man's journey to overcome adversity and build a new life in a new land. It is a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit, and a reminder of the challenges faced by those who seek to make a better life for themselves and their families.Dr. Leatrim was too much overcome by passion to hear that despairing moan, his pride too deeply wounded to pity and forgive; and he continued, with the utmost severity of look and manner: ""Ay, wretched boy, you should have thought of that before; but not even to spare her feelings can I neglect my duty. I cannot demean myself by touching a thing so vile. Ralph, whom you have calumniated, shall inflict upon you a punishment suited to the baseness of your crime. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Susanna Moodie's book Roughing It in the Bush details her experiences as a Canadian immigrant. In the 1830s, Moodie moved to Upper Canada, which would later become Canada West, close to what is now Peterborough, Ontario. She published a "guide" to settler life for British subjects considering moving to Canada at the recommendation of her editor. The first edition of Roughing It in the Bush appeared in London in 1852. (then Toronto in 1871). It was Moodie's most popular piece of writing. The piece is organized as a sequence of chronological drawings and combines autobiographical and novelization of her experiences. A trilogy that Moodie authored to describe the immigrant experience in Canada included Roughing It in the Bush. Flora Lyndsay (1854), a prologue that details the preliminary immigration preparations, and Life in the Clearings, an examination of Canadian cities and institutions, round out the trio (1853). In Canada, Moodie had experience publishing brief articles for periodicals. Before Victoria Magazine was shut down in 1838, she and her husband served as its editors. Beginning in late 1838, she made contributions to the Literary Garland of Montreal.
