  • - Twelve Steps to Purity: More Christian Pollution

Make no mistake; AA is a sect or cult of Christianity.Christianity permeates the program denoted by revisions of Christian rites like Step Three, "Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him," which serves as the baptismal rebirth of born-again Christians. Step Five, "Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs," forms confession. AA argues these steps are spiritual, not religious, but this claim is disingenuous, considering everyone must practice them to follow the program correctly.Seeing AA as a Christian sect, cult, or church - all of which AA comprises elucidates further in a monotheistic God belief, adherence to loosely referenced scripture, and most of all because it produces the exact same controlling culture. As one AA victim described, "This time around, I made a promise to myself that I would obey all the family rules. After all, I had learned from an early age that it is God's will to honor thy parents, and I now learned in AA that, as a recovering alcoholic, I was to do God's will, which was not-so-subtly hinted to be that which is taught by Christian religions."[i]Seeing AA as a Christian sect mires in AA's interpretation of Christianity that genericizes God and redacts all mention of Jesus and the Abrahamic God, replaced with "higher power." Confounding this view further, faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ defines Christians, and witnessing AAs recoil at the mention of Christ or the Bible makes one question how AAs can be Christians if they do not follow Christ? They do follow (a) Christ and just don't know it.[i] Fransway, Rebecca (2000). 12-step horror stories: true tales of misery, betrayal, and abuse in AA, NA, and 12-step treatment.

How sick is this: I'm the major jock-stud in high school, but my brother has the brain of a badminton birdie and a body to match. I've got everything and he's got nothing. I'm a three-year, three-sport letterman and Shawn can't even stand up! Like I said, sick, huh? It's hard to be a brother to someone who doesn't even know you're there. How can you talk to him when he can't understand a thing you say? How can you listen to him when he can't speak a word? How can you love him when he's so messed up, he can't love you back? And how can you have a life of your own when your father bailed on the family, leaving you to be the "man of the house"? Fueled by rage at what has happened to his family, Paul is ready to explode. And he is haunted by something even worse?something he can never tell anyone. It is something he will have to face if he is to have any hope of a future at all. While Cruise Control is a companion to Terry Trueman's Printz Honor book, Stuck in Neutral, it is the completely independent story of a family's "other" son?the one who is healthy, gifted, normal. It is a courageously hopeful story told with power, compassion, and humor.

But he also fears that he'll forever be known as "The Kid Who Killed Cole Hardt."Praise for The Killed Who Killed Cole Hardt:"Terry Trueman has delivered a novel of uncommon perspective. Encapsulated in the wreckage of modern life, a subtle friendship is formed that transcends generational trauma, releases a heart's-cry elegy to Bukowski and Whitman, and symbolizes the poem that resides in the heart of everyman." --Shann Ray, American Book Award winning author of Balefire, American Masculine, and the poetry chapbook Atomic Theory 432"Every aspiring young author will benefit from this book. Packed with wit and wisdom, The Kid Who Killed Cole Hardt entertains, illuminates and inspires."--Michael Gurian, New York Times bestselling author of The Wonder of Boys"Coming-of-age sometimes takes a knock upside the head, and by the end, Trueman's “kid” is anything but a kid. This book is perfect for that bright, next generation of readers and leaders looking to take the wheel. Literally and metaphorically, Trueman hands over the keys."--Will Weaver, Award-winning Y.A. author of Memory Boy"Another great story by Terry Trueman, whose books always hit squarely on issues of coming of age and learning important life lessons."--Edward Averett, Award-winning Y.A. author of Cameron and the Girls
