Asnières n'était pas encore à la mode. En ce moment cette portion de la Seine ressemble au grand canal de Venise. Les embarcations se sont réfugiées dans la ville: grandes barques pontées, blondies de goudron, avec une ceinture verte comme les treschuits de Hollande, toues cloutées de chevilles en bois, bateaux à vapeur, remorqueurs, galiotes, clippers, youyous, canots, yoles, périssoires, bateaux de tous les gabarits. Les mâts se dressent rayant l'air bleu de leur ton saumon-clair, et balancent leur légère flamme qu'agite ce vent d'est qui pousse nos lettres par delà les remparts et les forts, au-dessus des casques pointus de l'ennemi. Mais voici, parmi cette flottille pacifique, des chaloupes d'un galbe farouche et rébarbatif. Leur avant porte un éperon comme une galère romaine. L'arrière plonge dans l'eau comme pour exhausser la proue. Une sévère peinture grise revêt leurs flancs de tôle striés de meurtrières. On dirait des orques dans un banc de harengs inoffensifs.
