Matilda: A Tragedy is a play written by Thomas Francklin and first published in 1775. The play tells the tragic story of Matilda, a young woman who falls in love with Mortimer, a man who is promised to another woman. Matilda's father, Count Baldwin, disapproves of the relationship and sends her away to a convent. Mortimer, unable to be with Matilda, marries his betrothed and becomes consumed with guilt and regret. Meanwhile, Matilda's life in the convent becomes increasingly miserable, and she eventually dies of a broken heart. The play explores themes of love, duty, and sacrifice, and is considered a classic example of 18th-century sentimental drama.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
