Practical Grammar and Composition is a classic book on English grammar that remains relevant a century after its publishing. During the 1970s the Republic of Korea (South Korea) was a strange mixture of modern industry and medieval traditions, of Christianity and Shamanism, of a democratic façade masking a brutal totalitarian dictatorship. Thomas Wood, a Peace Corps volunteer who specialized in hydraulic engineering, who now works for a prominent American company, took careful notes on the things he heard and saw while he worked in the R.O.K, from 1974-1977. This novel, featuring barely disguised characters participating in thinly veiled events, captures the essence of those days. Boyce Mann's journey back to the land of his birth, what he finds there, what happens to him there, represent a fiction that Thomas Wood calls "historical fantasy." His story may not have happened, but it did happen. This book was written from the point of view of someone who lost everything because he did drugs and got caught. The author tells of his own personal tragedies without holding back anything. He lost his kids, his wife, his career and went into poverty. He added that you have to be "18 to read" this book because he doesn't want teenagers to think doing drugs is cool. He confesses his many drug-related crimes and provides the reader with a deep look inside "the hood." He includes a "suicide note," many letters to and from the ACLU as well as poems and a rap he wrote at the height of his struggle. He had to write this book to save himself, as well as hope to have an impact on helping to save children and future families from a similar disaster. He details the destruction of his own daughter, who was also suicidal. Moreover, he provides a unique perspective because he has taught many psychologically damaged children in the class setting who had also been removed from their home. It is important for people to read this, or the only side they will ever hear is from the Department of Social Services. Without this book, the victims would never have a voice; he shares many true stories from people who went through the same tragedy. Also, this book serves a much higher purpose to help persuade people to end the law that gets children taken from their parents for just having a positive drug screen. He goes into detail of the damage it causes to both the children (the most) and their families. The author also holds a Master's Degree in Education and was an elementary school teacher for many years. He is currently drug-free and is working toward becoming a career bartender.

The parts devoted to composition contain brief expositions of only the essential principles of ordinary composition. Especial stress has been laid upon letter-writing, since this is believed to be one of the most practical fields for actual composition work. Because such a style seemed best suited to the general scheme and purpose of the book, the method of treatment has at times been intentionally rather formal. Abundant and varied exercises have been incorporated at frequent intervals throughout the text. So far as was practicable the exercises have been kept constructive in their nature, and upon critical points have been made very extensive.
